Job Summary The Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) functions under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN). The LVN provides nursing care to adult Detox patients, within the LVN scope of practices – as delegated by the RN. Duties 1. Assumes responsibility and accountability for designated patients 2. Provides Nursing Care patients 3. Identifies self as nurse responsible patient care to patients, family and physicians 4. Provides nursing care for all patients within scope of LVN practice 5. Gathers data relevant to the patient’s individual needs and age group a. Elicits important information concerning the patient’s progress b. Gathers data regarding patient needs while providing direct patient care 1) Documents nursing observations according to hospital charting standards 2) For the benefit of the patient, the nurse and the physician to visit the patient together 3) Administers medications and treatments per hospital policy c. Reports symptoms, reactions and progress of patient to the clinical supervisor and/or charge nurse and appropriate action has been taken d. Pursues proper chain of command to attain a satisfactory solution e. Initiates changes to improve patient care; discusses changes with doctor when appropriate f. Provides IV Therapy according to nursing policy and procedure that is within LVN scope of practice 6. Assists the RN in patient and family education 7. Utilizes educational opportunities within the hospital and other avenues to maintain clinical expertise to promote personal growth and development 8. Responsible for knowledge of legal aspects of nursing 9. Attends fire and safety classes annually and maintains a current CPR (BLS) card Title: Ambulatory Care Services: Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) Page 2 of 2 Qualifications 1. Must be currently registered withTexas Board of Vocational Nursing and be certified to start IV’s and administer medications 2. Current BLS Certification 3. Previous experience as an LVN in an acute general hospital is desirable 4. Must present a professional demeanor 5. Must have good interpersonal skills 6. Must maintain a calm and reasonable attitude during crisis and conflict 7. Must demonstrate initiative and good judgment 8. Must respond appropriately to routine and emergency situations 9. Must be able to set and revise priorities based on changes in the situation 10. Furthers his/her education by attending in-service classes, staff meetings, continuing education classes and reading of current professional materials
