The Oversight Board makes binding and independent decisions about the most challenging content issues on Facebook and Instagram. Members of the Board include Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Michael McConnell, Director of Stanford’s Constitutional Law Center, and many other diverse leaders and thinkers from around the world. The Board issued its first decisions in January 2021.

We are excited to announce that Major, Lindsey & Africa has been exclusively retained by Oversight Board LLC (OSB) to conduct a search for its General Counsel.
Overview : The General Counsel is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing all legal, governance, and regulatory matters for OSB. Reporting to the Executive Director, the General Counsel serves as a key advisor to the Board of Trustees, Co-Chairs, LLC Managers, and executive leadership, ensuring that OSB maintains its independence, integrity, and legal compliance while continuing to make high-impact content decisions. This role requires a strategic, forward-thinking leader who can navigate a complex, global legal environment while proactively addressing regulatory, litigation, and governance challenges. Additionally, the General Counsel will oversee a team of three legal professionals and supervise the government relations function, ensuring cohesive and efficient management of all legal and regulatory activities.
Organization : The Oversight Board is an independent oversight body that reviews Meta’s content moderation decisions on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. By issuing binding case decisions and policy recommendations, the Board ensures that Meta applies its content standards fairly, transparently, and in line with global human rights principles, particularly freedom of expression.
Experience : The ideal candidate will have at least 10 years of legal experience in a leading law firm, in-house legal department, or regulatory / governmental body, with expertise in corporate governance, regulatory compliance, technology law, and litigation risk management. Experience in government affairs, regulatory bodies, and / or the technology sector is highly preferred. The candidate should possess a strong ethical framework, a commitment to freedom of expression, and the ability to manage complex legal and policy challenges in a dynamic global environment. The role requires exceptional leadership and stakeholder management skills, the ability to navigate evolving regulatory landscapes, and a pragmatic, solutions-oriented approach to governance and risk while fostering collaboration across jurisdictions. Demonstrated experience managing and supervising a team is indispensable.
Location : Washington, DC, strongly preferred. Strong candidates in New York, NY, or elsewhere in the Eastern US time zone will be considered.
Compensation : $332,000 base and excellent benefits.
