Assistant Controller (Small family office)

We are working with a small family office in the Denver area to help identify a person that will assist the current controller and eventually assume the controller position. The office is made up of 2 family members and the controller. The responsibilities for the position vary from interesting and complex to tedious. Everyone in the office helps with whatever is required. If you need constant growth opportunities and challenges to keep you happy, this won’t be the right position. If you like a lot of variety, enjoy working by yourself on a regular basis and want to be part of a small team; this could be a good fit.

Here are some of the responsibilities for the position:

• Maintain accurate accounting records for 7 entities in QuickBooks
• Prepare and understand financial statements
• Maintain depreciation schedules
• Help develop proformas and forecasts
• Be involved in investment and development related discussions
• Oversee audit performed by outside firm
• Assist outside preparers with workpapers and reviewing tax returns
• Oversee indirect tax work (compliance, audits, etc.)
• Banking responsibilities
• Maintain minutes and records for board of directors’ meetings
• Various HR and Administrative responsibilities
• Assist with various IT issues

Because of the small size of the office and the close working relationship between the family and this person, soft skills and personality are critical in determining the best fit. Someone that is more reserved, is happy working alone much of the time and is willing to get their hands dirty will do well in this position.
