Job Overview
The Accounting Manager will be responsible for overseeing the daily, monthly, and annual financial operations for the Pace Transportation Services joint venture with Wabash and included acquisitions. This role will be an integral part in the development of the accounting and financial operations of this joint venture, including the consolidation of multiple enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. They will develop and implement systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting financial information. Additionally, this role will start as a one-person team then build a team to support all accounting and financial operations of the joint venture.
Responsibilities and Duties
Financial and Accounting Operations:
  • Maintain the business unit’s general ledger chart of accounts which includes preparing the trial balance and making adjustments as needed.
  • Ensure the accuracy and timeliness of journal entries for standard and non-standard items in general ledger accounts.
  • Identify variances within financial data and properly identify and communicate root causes.
  • Lead the monthly closing of accounting systems ensuring timely and accurate financial statements.
  • Implement accounts payable and accounts receivable cash payment/collection best practices and performance metrics.
  • Ensure financial plans are integrated into operational strategies by working closely with other departments.
  • Responsible for improving operations that increase the accuracy and timeliness of financial reporting and data.
  • Implement and enforce general accounting policies and procedures.
  • Keep financial information accurate and compliant with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
  • Oversee and participate in special projects and perform other accounting related duties as requested.
Financial and Accounting Systems:
  • Serve as a highly-skilled user of the ERP tool and drive productivity, efficiency, and accuracy of financial data within it.
  • Serve as a key project member in the consolidation and/or transition of ERPs within the business.
  • Maintain all financial systems and processes to increase standardization, efficiency, cost reduction and streamlined operations.
Financial and Accounting Reporting and Audits:
  • Contribute to financial statements for the business unit’s leadership in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Oversee and/or perform required financial audits for the business unit.
  • Perform planning, budgeting and forecasting for the business unit to meet short- and long-term financial goals.
  • Responsible for contributing to all periodic financial statements and supporting schedules including balance sheets and income statements.
  • Measure budgeted vs actual spend to help management in decision making.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
  • Establish, monitor and continuously improve processes and procedures to exercise financial control, ensure internal and external compliance and minimize risk. Hold others accountable to these standards and take action to correct when necessary.
  • Oversee accounts, ledgers, and financial reporting systems ensuring compliance with appropriate US GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform regular audits to ensure accuracy and adherence to company policies.
  • Work with internal teams and external auditors during audits to ensure smooth and efficient audits of accounting records.
  • Collaborate with leadership on assigning and defining roles and responsibilities for internal controls to ensure effectiveness and proficiency of operations and reliability of financial reporting.
  • Report on internal control compliance to the appropriate authority, including external auditors.
  • Assist with all audit activity and provide necessary documentation and support to auditors.
Team Development:

  • Define the roles within the team to support the Value Creation Plan and set key performance indicators for each role to review on a regular cadence and in annual reviews.

  • Understand team member’s career goals and support them in achieving the career path they wish to follow.
  • Develop a training program for the team for specific roles and behavioral skills training.
  • Encourage and foster a collaborative work environment within the team and between the team and other departments.
  • Lead teams to develop reliable processes and procedures that produce results.
Skills and Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business or another related field is required.
  • 7-10 years of experience in General Accounting, Finance, and/or Accounting Services, etc. required.
  • Experience in transportation, distribution and/or manufacturing preferred.
  • Prior leadership experience is required.
  • Proficient understanding and use of Microsoft Office Suite products, ERP systems (specifically, Karmak, Epicore and Profit 21), finance and asset management systems, and business analytics tools.
  • Prior experience in ERP implementation and/or consolidation is a plus.
  • Ability to independently work towards results with minimal oversight.
  • Shown professionalism through clear and concise communication with internal teams, external customers and key stakeholders.
  • Experienced and forward-thinking professional with operational experience and a proven track record of creative problem solving and change management.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to develop processes, procedures and reporting.
  • Ability to collaboratively work with leaders within and outside of their department.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to lift/carry 50 lbs. infrequently.
  • Travel required: 50% to Greater Chicago area, travel reduced over time but still expected.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
