Job Title: Machinist Technician
Location: Ogden, UT 84404
Duration: Direct Hire
Shift:
- 2nd shift (Mon-Thurs 3pm to 1:30am)
- Weekend shift (Fri-Sun 5am to 5pm)
Position Summary:
- Sets up and operates various conventional and/or numerically controlled machining centers on the most complex and difficult jobs.
- Works from blueprints, sketches, planning sheets, verbal instructions, and/or engineering, tooling, or equipment information. Contributes to lean initiatives to increase productivity and reduce costs. Works independently with minimum guidance in a team environment.
Responsibilities:
- Runs multiple machines efficiently, often requiring simultaneous operations. Adapts or improvises tooling to achieve results that necessitate a broad knowledge of production machining technology, operating skills, and shop techniques, along with diversified experience.
- Sets up, adjusts, and operates a variety of conventional and/or special purpose machines to perform diverse and challenging production operations on work with close tolerances, several dimensional relationships, unusual contours, and specific dimensional and finish requirements.
- Interprets customer requirements from blueprints, complex drawings, engineering specifications, quality directives, charts, tables, sketches, and verbal instructions.
- Interfaces with engineering to resolve drawing errors, suggest design changes, and solve product/process problems.
- Implements manufacturing methods using standard production machines, materials, and tooling, and may advise and assist with tooling design.
- Makes complex setups that may include multiple workpiece stations, utilizing custom and standard holding devices.
- Develops and defines processes with limited documentation as required.
- Troubleshoots and resolves machining problems.
- Responsible for machining and checking parts to maintain high levels of quality and efficiency.
- Inspects finished parts for conformance to specifications through visual examination, utilizing precision measuring instruments such as gages, calipers, micrometers, comparators, and surface plate techniques. May be required to use a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and ensures equipment is calibrated according to schedule.
- Routinely maintains equipment to ensure cleanliness, accuracy, and reliability specific to division requirements.
- Accurately performs statistical process control (SPC) specific to division requirements.
- Uses advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry, along with a general knowledge of metal characteristics and other processing requirements.
- Actively contributes to lean initiatives by identifying areas for improvement and effectively applying lean concepts and tools in the work area.
- Provides guidance and assistance in coordinating workload priorities to accommodate business demands.
- Observes all company policies and procedures, including safety rules, and maintains a clean and orderly work area.
- Trains and mentors less experienced team members.
- Performs other related responsibilities as requested.
Qualifications:
- Five or more years of directly related machining experience in a high-technology manufacturing environment, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Capable of handling multiple tasks with changing priorities to meet customer needs.
- May require specialized certification specific to division requirements (e.g., certified operator).
- Reads, understands, and follows blueprints, complex drawings, engineering specifications, and both written and verbal instructions.
- Able to make and evaluate precision machine setups.
- Possesses a working knowledge of advanced shop mathematics, including trigonometry.
- Capable of implementing lean initiatives effectively.
- Demonstrates strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate in a team environment on research and solution development.
- Possesses effective mentoring and training skills, serving as a resource for other team members.
- Interprets reports and utilizes job-specific software applications, including employee self-service systems and specialized automated systems (e.g., PMR, TORS, email).
- Actively participates in goal setting, performance feedback, and self-development activities, demonstrating team member competencies.
