High School SRAP - Joint Global Change Intern [Summer]

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking ambitious, high caliber sophomore, junior or senior high school students for intern assignments within the Student Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP). This summer internship is a research-based experience for students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors and/or students interested in science and engineering. SRAP is a 10-week program, estimated based on start date; the anticipated start date for summer cohort will be in June 17, 2025.

In this computational analysis project, the student will spend the summer 2025 period designing and implementing an analysis of the greenhouse gas flux data at the TEMPEST experimental site (see https://compass.pnnl.gov). This will involve background science and statistical readings and exercises; learning R or Python, if not already a skill; visualizing the 2020-2024 data; performing the spatial analysis; developing a summary presentation; and collaborating with the research group of the primary mentor, Dr. Ben Bond-Lamberty.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Applicants must be currently enrolled as a sophomore, junior or senior in a public or private high school at time of application
• Applicants must be 16 years of age by start date
• Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (from beginning of 9th grade to current standing)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Relevant Course Work Desired: Earth science, ecology, and/or biology.
• Computer Skills Desired: Basic programming skills (any language), R or Python experience, Git.
• Other Desired Skills: Willingness to learn, scientific curiosity.

PNNL lists the full pay range for the position in the job posting. Starting pay is calculated from the minimum of the pay range and actual placement in the range is determined based on an individual’s relevant job-related skills, qualifications, and experience. This approach is applicable to all positions, with the exception of positions governed by collective bargaining agreements and certain limited-term positions which have specific pay rules.

As part of our commitment to fair compensation practices, we do not ask for or consider current or past salaries in making compensation offers at hire. Instead, our compensation offers are determined by the specific requirements of the position, prevailing market trends, applicable collective bargaining agreements, pay equity for the position type, and individual qualifications and skills relevant to the performance of the position.
