This is an on-call Substitute Teacher position in the Early Learning Community at Pacific University
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
The Early Learning Community (ELC) at Pacific University seeks applicants who are committed to working on-call as a collaborative member of a team of educators in a progressive preschool/kindergarten education environment that models best practices.
Functions as Substitute Teacher in Kindergarten, First/Second or Third/Fourth grade classrooms, serving as the Lead Teacher and/or coordinating with the Assistant Teacher for that classroom to provide a supportive learning environment so that children acquire connected, meaningful knowledge about themselves and the world.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitate learning experiences as outlined in the substitute plans using a project-based approach.
- Interact with children in ways that respect each child’s individuality and nourish growth in intellectual, socio-emotional, artistic, and physical domains.
- Lead groups of children as suggested by the daily schedule of activities, using practices which promote constructive play, positive group interaction, and respect for school environment. Daily schedule includes supervision of both indoor and outdoor activities.
- Assist in identifying and meeting the developmental, health, safety, and security needs of each child.
- Communicate questions, concerns, or feedback for families to the Assistant Teacher and Head of School. Share a final following for the day with classroom’s Lead Teacher so that they may address questions or issues that came up when they return.
- Assist throughout facility with the maintenance of orderliness and positive aesthetic. Tidy the classroom environment at the end of the school day as outlined by the substitute plans.
- Maintain and nurture positive and effective relationships with guests of the Early Learning Community.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
- Must have previous experience managing large group of children at the elementary level. Ideal candidates will have previous experience as a lead or substitute teacher.
- BA or MAT in Education preferred, as a is a current teaching or substitute license, but not required depending on other relevant experience in the field.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES & BEHAVIORS:
- Familiarity and experience with project-based, constructivist educational approaches and working with young children.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a large (10 ) group of children through a set program of learning activities.
- Has successfully established and maintained pleasant, effective working relationships with students, teachers, staff and the general public.
- High degree of reliability and commitment to work hours scheduled.
- Flexibility of hours as this is an “on-call” position; ELC staff may schedule with subsitutes months in advance or reach out the morning of to check availability that day.
- Able to work independently with a high degree of confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrollment in the Oregon Criminal History Registry of the Child Care Division.
- Strong verbal/written English communication skills.
- Ability to sit, bend and lift up to 50 pounds and move quickly around a classroom and playground.
- Pediatric CPR / First Aid certification. (CPR classes through Washington County: https://www.co.washington.or.us/HHS/EMS/CPRAED/upload/Public-CPR-Classes.pdf)
WORKING CONDITIONS & SCHEDULES:
- Classroom and outdoor playground environment.
- Position involves a public interface and continual interaction with parents, children, university students and faculty.
- Annual schedules closely follow the public school calendar, September through mid-June.
