Job Description
Title: Drivers Helper
Department: Operations
Classification: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Route Supervisor and Collections Driver

Summary: This position assists collection drivers to safely operate a heavy-duty truck to perform assigned duties. The Drivers Helper assists drivers by assuring the driver safely operates the truck by spotting the driver for backing up, traffic control, positioning & safe emptying of containers including ensuring customer sites are free of spillage and left clean. This position requires initiative, the ability to exercise independent judgment while anticipating problem areas and providing solutions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Works in accordance with Company safety policies and procedures, OSHA requirements, as well as local, state & federal laws.
Immediately reports any unsafe situations or service calls to Route Supervisor/Manager or Dispatch before attempting service.
Safely assists collection drivers who operates truck on pre-established route to in accordance with
Company policy and procedures. Collects and dumps garbage, refuse, recyclables and or organics into refuse trucks while covering a designated route in a residential, commercial, or industrial zone. Spots the unloading of refuse trucks at the landfill, transfer station, material recovery facility or similar facility.
Adheres to all policies, procedures and other requirements at the Landfill and Transfer Station
Provides a high level of service through courteous and expeditious customer service in all aspects of refuse operation to the general public and customers. Exhibits a positive attitude towards company, customer and municipal goals.
Ensures garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly; pick up may require retrieving containers from customer’s using back door. Tags improper refuse containers and waste.
Answers questions for customers and directs them to contact Customer Service or appropriate government office for additional information
Performs a variety of manual duties in the clean-up of scattered or spilled refuse, recyclables and/or organics; positions for emptying small to large trash bins using truck hydraulics;
Performs other tasks as required -- such as, but not limited to, assisting other routes for completion, attending community events, or delivery of bins and/or carts.
Participates and cooperates in all scheduled training, briefings, and meetings as required by Route
Supervisor, Dispatcher or Manager.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or higher
Must be at least 21 years of age or older
Understand refuse collection policies, procedures, guidelines and practices.
Hear and see in the normal audio range with or without correction
Exhibit normal range of body motion
Ability to manipulate heavy equipment control levers.
Follow a designated refuse collection route or work schedule.
Maintain written records and service responses.
Must be able to speak and read English well enough to communicate with customers, co-workers, dispatch and supervisors, understand highway and traffic signals, and be able to make legible entries on paperwork.

Physical Requirements:
Ability to push and pull up to 90 lbs.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. individually and 80 lbs. with assistance.
