TITLE 1 LITERACY PARAPROFESSIONAL Reports to: Building Principal with district-level coordination and oversight by the Director of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum Responsibilities: This position is accountable for assisting students in learning subject matter and skills that will contribute to their development of literacy and reading skills. Literacy paraprofessionals can assist students within the classroom setting as well as in small group pull-out sessions. Essential Functions: • facilitates the identification of students eligible for remedial instruction • collaborates with classroom teacher to plan a program of study that meets the individual needs, interest, and abilities of the students •meets with and instructs assigned students; assesses student learning •implements a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media focused on attaining literacy benchmarks as identified by the frameworks and local curriculum guide • assists in preparing students for ELA MCAS and other assessments •communicates with classroom teacher regularly to adjust program of study as needed • prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of immediate supervisor • encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior and achievement • documents the learning problems of students and seeks the assistance of district specialists, as required • communicates with parents when appropriate • maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulation •strives to maintain and improve professional competence especially as relates to the teaching of ELA and Reading • attends staff meetings and serves on curriculum committees, as required •performs other duties, as assigned Ability to: •communicate effectively both verbal and in writing with teachers, students and administration •solve practical problems with students and staff •understand and carry out oral and written directions •identify, analyze, solve and organize work to meet deadlines •provide information and assistance to parents, the general public and other staff members in a helpful, courteous and timely manner •maintain cooperative and productive working relationship when dealing with students and staff Knowledge of: •best practices in literacy instruction, interventions and remediation •child development and challenges faced by students with or without learning or substantial disabilities •effective use of computer and relevant educational software applications •interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy •district policies, rules and regulations applicable to the school district •effective use of data to increase student achievement Qualifications: •evidence of the ability to perform each essential function satisfactorily; the requirements listed above are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. •valid Massachusetts Department of Education certification for specific grade levels preferred Education: •a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, preferably with a focus in English Physical Demands: The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, as described above.
