Summary
Palm Beach Atlantic University (PBA), a private Christian institution located in West Palm Beach, Florida, seeks an Assistant Professor of Communication. Teaching responsibilities will include teaching communication courses (reference sample list of courses below) and, depending on enrollment, might also include courses in journalism or public relations. The typical teaching load is four courses each semester and this position reports to the Chair of the Department of Communication, Journalism, and Public Relations. The department is located in the College of the Arts, which includes Cinema, Communication, Dance, Digital Media, Gaming, Graphic Design, Journalism, Music, Preparatory Department, Public Relations, Sports Broadcasting, Theatre, and Visual Art. Salary is commensurate with credentials and experience.
Essential Functions
- According to expertise, primary focus in Communication coursework. Preference to applicants with secondary focus in Public Relations or Journalism coursework. Courses taught may include Interpersonal Communication, Civil Discourse and the Common Good, Communication Theory & Research, Group Dynamics, Nonverbal Communication, Public Speaking, Intercultural Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Communication Ethics.
- Participate in University service, faculty development programs, and student advising
- Develop and deliver interdisciplinary courses
- Contribute to scholarly and/or proprietary activity
- Integrate Christian faith and pedagogy
- Oversee experiential learning projects with external organizations, such as internships and senior capstone campaign
Education and Experience
Required Qualifications
• A Ph.D. in Communication (Doctoral Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but all degree requirements must be completed by Summer 2026)
• Demonstrated knowledge of Communication as an academic discipline and a practice
• Record of successful teaching and service
• Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal and communication skills, as well as conflict resolution
• Commitment to shared governance and consensus building within a university setting
• Experience with and commitment to building community across and with programs, departments, and schools
Preferred Qualifications
• 3 years of teaching experience at the university level
• 3 years professional experience in Communication
• Successful track record of online course development and instruction as measured by student and administration evaluations.
