Special Education Coordinator & Work-Based Learning Coordinator
Reports to: Superintendent of Schools
The Special Education Coordinator & Work-Based Learning Coordinator is a combined role responsible for overseeing both special education services and work-based learning programs for the district. This individual will collaborate with teachers, administrators, students, and community partners to ensure all students, particularly those with disabilities, receive high-quality educational services and real-world work experiences that align with their individual goals and transition needs. The coordinator will manage the day-to-day operations of both programs, ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, and support the district’s efforts to provide an inclusive and supportive learning environment in and outside of the classroom.
Special Education Coordinator Duties:
Program Management: Oversee and manage all aspects of special education programming within the district, including compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Iowa state regulations.
IEP Development & Monitoring: Lead the development, implementation, and review of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities, ensuring goals and accommodations align with students’ needs.
Staff Supervision & Support: Provide professional development and support for special education teachers, paraprofessionals, and other related service providers. Foster collaboration among educators, support staff, and families.
Compliance & Reporting: Ensure that all special education services are compliant with federal, state, and local regulations—complete required documentation and reports for the district and state departments.
Collaboration: Work closely with general education teachers, parents, and administrators to ensure inclusive practices and facilitate the successful integration of students with disabilities into the school community.
Work-Based Learning Coordinator Duties:
Program Development & Management: Design, implement, and manage work-based learning opportunities for students, including internships, apprenticeships, job shadowing, and Career-Connected Learning experiences.
Industry Partnerships: Build and maintain relationships with local businesses, organizations, and community partners to provide meaningful, career-oriented experiences for students. Act as a liaison between students, employers, and school staff.
Student Support & Guidance: Provide support to students in securing and navigating work-based learning opportunities, ensuring students understand workplace expectations, safety, and professional conduct.
Curriculum Integration: Collaborate with Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff to align work-based learning opportunities with relevant coursework and career pathways.
Data Tracking & Reporting: Track student participation and success in work-based learning programs, including gathering feedback from students, employers, and educators. Report on outcomes to district leadership.
Desired Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Special Education, or a related field.
- Iowa BOEE Licensure.
- Experience in special education programs and service delivery.
- Knowledge or a developed passion for work-based learning programs
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
- Ability to build partnerships with local employers and community organizations.
- Ability to work with diverse student populations, including students with disabilities.
- Strong problem-solving and leadership skills.
- Iowa Department of Education Work-Based Learning Coordinator endorsement (or willingness to obtain)
