POSITION OVERVIEW: Reporting directly to the Director of Corporate FP&A, the Manager, Product and Technology Finance role will involve duties across all facets of the FP&A function, including forecasting, budgeting, financial reporting, and managing the capitalization of labor and vendor costs. The role will ensure compliance with accounting standards while supporting the Company’s mission to drive educational excellence through technology.

This is a critical and challenging position. The ideal candidate will be adept at synthesizing complex data to present clear conclusions and supporting evidence to aid strategic decision-making.

This is a hybrid position working out of our McLean, VA office. 

SPECIFIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Financial Planning & Analysis
  • Develop and oversee annual budgets and rolling forecasts to support the development of educational tools and technology, ensuring alignment with product roadmaps and strategic priorities.
  • Perform scenario planning and financial modeling to evaluate the impact of new product launches, technology upgrades, and market adoption.
  • Conduct variance analysis to identify gaps between budgeted and actual performance, recommending solutions to improve financial outcomes.
• Cost Management
  • Track and manage technology and product development expenses, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently for curriculum development, educational tools, and IT Managed Services.
  • Evaluate and report on capital expenditures (CapEx) for software, systems, and hardware investments.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks related to project overruns, compliance with educational technology regulations, and market demand changes.
• Capitalization of Costs
  • Ensure compliance with capitalization policies for internal labor and vendor costs
  • Oversee the time-tracking process to capture capitalizable labor hours spent on product and technology development
  • Collaborate with leadership and accounting to manage vendor invoices to correctly classify capitalizable costs, supporting accurate reporting and audit readiness.
  • Collaborate with accounting to process journal entries and establish amortization schedules for capitalized costs.
• Performance Measurement
  • Define and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as development cost per product, time to market, and ROI on technology initiatives.
  • Conduct post-mortem analyses of completed projects to identify lessons learned and inform future investments.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with technology and product development teams to assess the financial implications of scope changes, delays, or new project requests.
  • Work closely with accounting to ensure accurate cost classification and provide documentation for audits and compliance reviews.
  • Educate internal stakeholders on financial policies, including cost capitalization and reporting processes.
• System and Reporting
  • Utilize ERP and project management tools to streamline tracking and reporting of capitalizable labor and vendor costs.
  • Develop dashboards and reports to communicate financial insights and trends to senior leadership.
• Perform other tasks and projects as required
  • Lead consolidation and review of global capital expenditure budget and forecast
  • Lead product-level reporting and profitability
  • Lead pricing and analysis of products and services across the Company

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field; MBA or CPA preferred
• 5-7 years of experience in FP&A, preferably within educational technology, software development, or a related industry
• Strong knowledge of accounting standards related to cost capitalization
• Proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
• Advanced skills in ERP systems, project management tools, and Excel
• Strong work ethic, self-drive, and a positive attitude
• Ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams
