What are the responsibilities and job description for the Coordinator of English Language Learner Support position at Park University?
The purpose of this position is to coordinate services for students who need specialized assistance in reading, speaking, and writing English for their Park University classes. These services include one-to-one and group tutoring, course-embedded tutoring, academic mentoring, and consulting with staff and faculty across the University.
Position Accountabilities
- Coordinate ELL academic support services for undergraduate and graduate students, including training of professional and peer tutors and mentors
- Plan, develop, and implement a strategic plan that focuses on providing broad support for international students, student-athletes, and other English language learners
- Identify and implement opportunities for course-embedded tutoring, student workshops, peer mentoring and other forms of support in addition to traditional one-to-one tutoring
- Lead the development of a successful learning environment for students by providing professional development to faculty and staff on how to support English language learners.
- Work collaboratively with students, staff, and faculty across the University to socialize services, to identify ongoing needs, and to propose enhancements to existing services and/or new forms of support
- Curate and/or create resources for students such as guides, online tutorials, etc.
- Provide training and support resources to faculty in collaboration with academic program administrators and leaders within student life, student services, international education, writing across the curriculum, and faculty development programs
- Participate in assessment of all ELL services, within the broader assessment plan for academic retention initiatives, and collaborate on data-driven enhancements to ELL services
- Beyond academic support, help students understand university policies and how to navigate course expectations.
- As time allows, meet with ELL learners through open office hours or scheduled appointments to provide direct support and to promote relevant University services
Position Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field with 3-5 years of professional experience working with English Language Learners in an educational setting. Candidates with less experience may be considered, providing they have an earned graduate degree or specialized training in ELL, English with ELL, ESL, TESOL, or related field.
- Analytical and organizational skills to understand, assess, and contribute to the development of programs and services
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written communication, to effectively interact with student, staff, and faculty stakeholders
- Cross-cultural knowledge, awareness, and empathy to facilitate student, staff, and faculty development
- Knowledge of higher education norms and expectations for student privacy and non-discrimination
Physical Requirements
- Must have computer skills to handle standard computer programs (Microsoft Office), and have sufficient computer literacy to use platforms such as the student information system and learning management system
