Job Overview:
Parker Towing Co, Inc., founded in 1940, is a leading barge line operator in the United States. Operating inland water ways around the United States. We are seeking a Port Engineer to work out of our home office in Northport, Alabama. This role has travel (up to 40%) to visit various locations where our vessels are located. The qualified person will manage all maintenance, repairs, and modifications for assigned port and vessels. They will ensure assigned personnel and equipment compliance with regulatory agencies and company policies, they will promote a culture of safety to personnel working onboard company vessels, and provide support with regard to equipment inspections, vessel surveys, repairs and dry dockings as required. This role is on call after-hours to address time-sensitive matters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in planning, administering and coordination of both the maintenance and preventative maintenance programs for an assigned group of vessels.
- Review and oversee shipyard repairs, overhaul, modification and/or conversion of an assigned group of vessels.
- Conduct periodic inspections of vessels; and provide written reports on findings and corrective action plans.
- Act as a liaison with shipyards, equipment suppliers, classification societies and regulatory bodies.
- Assure all assigned vessels and barges are operating within the companies operating policies and procedures.
- Travel to various ports of call to consult with vessel personnel regarding operating procedures, maintenance schedules, and safety requirements.
- Ensure compliance with company policies.
- A team player willing to exercise authority and make independent decisions. Strong problem-solving abilities are required. Must have good negotiating skills to deal with regulators, customers, vendors, and marine personnel.
- Capable of recognizing the level of importance of new assignments and prioritizing them accordingly to meet all work deadlines without sacrificing operational readiness.
- Able to analyze, solve problems, reason, and make decisions regarding the repair of vessels.
- Interface with other vessel engineers, wheelhouse, clients, and equipment suppliers
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Good working knowledge of marine mechanical and electrical systems.
- Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
- Must be willing to work weekend/evening duty as needed.
- Knowledge of USCG and Sub Chapter M rules and regulations preferred.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time position with after hours access need be. Will have company resources to travel to vessels as needed.
