Job Summary:
The Authorization and Intake Specialist is responsible for the timely coordination of the referral process including the review/response/coordination of care for patients referred to Home Health and Hospice. This position requires extensive use of the telephone with appropriate interpersonal skills.
This is a hybrid position, with the expectation to be in-office for the first 6 weeks for training. Once training is completed, it would be optional to work from home 1-2 days per week.
Essential Functions:
· Serves as the first line of customer service for internal and external customers. Ensures timely and accurate responses to internal and external communications. Creates, builds and promotes positive, effective relationships across the continuum with the patients and communities we serve.
· Communicates referral information from certifying physicians and referral sources to Home Health, Hospice, Palliative disciplines to facilitate development of interdisciplinary POCs.
· Performs miscellaneous office work including but not limited to e-faxing, scanning, and routing of clinical and clerical information.
· Ensures receipt and review of all pertinent referral information necessary for compliance with CMS regulations, this includes Home Health Face to Face documentation. Responsible for accurate and timely completion of Face-to-Face workflow in EMR.
· Navigate referral source EMR for compilation of complete referral documentation, including but not limited to: insurance cards, H&P, and other clinical documentation.
· Maintains physician additions and changes in EMR.
· Performs Medicare and Medicaid eligibility/ verification checks on new patient charts
· Compiles and maintains statistical reporting on an ongoing basis and as directed. May include various compliance audits of clerical and clinical information.
· Communicates pertinent patient information to the branch team via approved processes.
· Professionally communicates and follows up with referral sources regarding required documentation for a complete referral.
· Complies with policies, procedures, and regulatory mandates including but not limited to abiding by the terms of the agency’s Compliance Program.
· Promotes safe work practices and work environments to protect the safety and wellbeing of employees.
· Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. One year of experience in medical field intake and medical terminology. Proficient with computer-based data entry, word processing, and the operation of other office machines. Reliable internet service. Ability to commute to the office from home with minimal disruption to the workday.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Home Health or Hospice intake experience.
- Homecare Homebase experience.
- Knowledge of Medicare/Insurance reimbursement issues and regulations to include coverage criteria.
- Demonstrates a desire to set and meet objectives and to find increasingly efficient ways to perform tasks.
- Requires minimal supervision and is self-directed.
- Exhibits critical thinking abilities and applies them for continuous improvement of services. Monitors systems, identify problem areas and develop/implements action plans, as necessary.
- Adheres to agency infection control and safety policies, including education, reporting, and practice implementation specific to the job position.
