Responsible for performing highly skilled mechanical repairs and routine maintenance of Pasco County vehicles and equipment. Performs computerized diagnostics of Pasco County vehicles and equipment.
Essential Job Functions
Inspects, repairs and performs maintenance on gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. Inspects, repairs and maintains County Emergency Services vehicles, construction equipment/landfill equipment and other medium to light duty units. Performs monthly inspections and services. Performs computerized diagnostic testing and analysis. Maintains work area and service truck in a clean, orderly manner. Assists other technicians, mechanics, mechanic trainee's and other shop personnel when directed. Uses a personal computer or laptop computer for analytical and documentation purposes. Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of mechanical repairs and maintenance of automobiles or commercial trucks.
- Knowledge of mechanical repairs on construction equipment.
- Knowledge of mechanical repairs on Emergency Services vehicles.
- Ability to repair or replace tires.
- Ability to perform brake jobs and tune-ups.
- Ability to perform routine monthly preventive maintenance.
- Knowledge and ability to operate a wrecker.
- Ability to learn additional tasks through supervised assignments.
- Ability to use a desktop or laptop computer for analytical and documentation purposes.
- Knowledge of various hydraulic systems.
Minimum Requirements
PHYSICAL SKILLS: Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and also push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Ability to climb, bend, stoop, walk, and squat frequently. Ability to work in various temperatures. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written, and visual communication.
EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from high school/vocational school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Two (2) years' of paid work experience as a journey-level automotive/diesel mechanic in the last five (5) years' repairing and maintaining automobiles, trucks, emergency vehicles, or heavy construction equipment.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS: Must have current valid Florida driver's license. Must obtain a Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class "B" with "P" endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire. ASE certifications in A1, A4, and A5 or T2, T4, T6 and T7 preferred. Original equipment manufacturer certifications may be substituted for some or all ASE certification requirements at the discretion of the County.
Applicants not meeting minimum qualifications for Automotive Technician, may be considered for Fleet Technician Assistant at $18.74 an hour (D.O.Q.).
All applicants must pass a urine test prior to employment. Future urine drug testing and alcohol breath testing will comply with the Pasco County Public Transportation Substance Abuse Policy.
