POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Courier
REPORTS TO: Administrator
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE JOB
This person is responsible for picking up anatomic pathology specimens from physicians’ offices and transporting them to the laboratory safely. The Courier also delivers reports and supplies to client physician offices. He or she performs these responsibilities safely and on a timely basis.
This individual is responsible for developing good relationships with physicians’ offices and communicating any problems to management on a timely basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Picks up specimens from client facilities and transports them to the laboratory in optimal condition for testing.
2. Picks up administrative mail from physicians at hospitals and transports to the business office in a timely fashion.
3. Adheres to the published route schedule and notifies appropriate pathology management of any required variation.
4. Responsible for efficient management of designated route
5. Responsible for printing pathology requisitions and filling client supply orders.
6. Delivers supply orders and reports to clients in a timely fashion.
7. Obeys all traffic regulations and laws.
8. Is familiar with and uses defensive driving techniques.
9. Practices road courtesy at all times
10. Adheres to the practice's cell phone policy.
11. Maintains the courier vehicle in a clean and road-ready fashion. Alerts appropriate pathology management to mechanical problems as soon as they are detected.
12. Maintains a professional appearance and attitude consistent with the quality of the practice and the Company courier dress code.
13. Understands and follows federal/state guidelines regarding specimen handling requirements and assures that all specimens are transported at required temperatures.
14. Complete OSHA/HAZMAT training sessions successfully. Contact appropriate pathology management if questions arise.
15. Maintains daily checklist and route management records.
16. Attends scheduled departmental business and training meetings.
17. Responds promptly to calls on Company cell phone. Ensures these are charged and operable. Reports any problems to management promptly.
18. Responsible for developing cooperative relationships with all client and hospital personnel and communicating client needs to appropriate pathology management.

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
21. Assist billing staff with medical billing as time allows and instructed by
Administrator.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE
Commercial driving experience desirable. Familiarity with laboratory departments, functions, and processes.
Adheres to company policy for drug testing, must be insurable and bondable.
REQUIRED EDUCATION
High school graduate or equivalent. Additional training in client relations and/or communication desirable.
REQUIRED LICENSES
Licensed driver for at least two years. Driving record must be sufficient to qualify for insurance with Company liability carrier at normal rates.
May be required to obtain 49CFR (HAZMAT) certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
40-hour workweek. Hours 9 – 5 PM. Possibility for some overtime, particularly on the
North Alabama route.
SAFETY HAZARDS
Extensive driving in company vehicles.
Potential exposure to laboratory chemicals including formalin and biohazardous materials including infectious specimens.
