Pathways for Change, Inc. is conducting a search for On-Call DSP Advocates for its Deaf Survivors Program. Interested candidates should submit a cover letter and resume to Sabrina Glover, Assistant Director for Deaf Services.
The Deaf Survivors Program operated by Pathways for Change, Inc. provides supportive services and counseling to d/Deaf, hard of hearing, late deafened, and Deaf/blind survivors of, and those directly affected by, sexual violence throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts using an empowerment model. These free and confidential services are offered to any d/Deaf survivor and/or their loved ones and are offered by staff in English and American Sign Language.
Advocates are paid a stipend to be on-call for six hour blocks of time during non-business hours to respond to Videophone Hotline Calls from d/Deaf survivors of sexual violence and, as needed, to accompany them throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to hospital emergency rooms for forensic examinations and to police stations to file police reports. A “response fee” is paid when an Advocate takes a call or responds to a hospital or police station. PPE will be provided.
Required Qualifications (Primary):
- Strong (Fluent) ASL skills and familiarity with Deaf culture required; ability to communicate in ASL and written English in a professional manner.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License and reliable transportation. Willingness to travel frequently between several sites located throughout Massachusetts.
- RCC Certification in sexual assault counseling, (or ability and willingness to obtain) required. (Pathways can provide.)
- Commitment to integration of multicultural perspective and feminist approach within all aspects of work and commitment to social change.
- Ability to work flexible schedule of early mornings, overnights and weekends.
Desired Qualifications (Secondary)
- Members of the Deaf Community are strongly encouraged to apply
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of sexual violence preferred. Knowledge of the societal factors contributing to the incidence of sexual violence within the community, preferred.
