Patz & Hall Winery is currently experiencing a renaissance. Founded by four friends in 1988, Patz & Hall has evolved into one of California's leading producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Overview
The winemaker, James Hall, has been at the helm for every harvest over the last 36 vintages, cultivating partnerships with renowned vineyards. These Grand Cru sites provide exceptional grapes, which are then vinified at our Sonoma-based winery under the care of our seven-person production team.
Harvest Intern Role
We offer a dynamic opportunity for individuals to contribute to all aspects of the vintage as part of the Patz & Hall Harvest Team. This role will involve a variety of tasks and responsibilities, ensuring no monotony or repetition.
- Fruit Receival: Coordinating with the director of grower relations, communicating vineyard and ripeness information with the winemaking team.
- Laboratory Work: Analyzing grapes, juice, and must for brix/pH/TA, coordinating with the enologist.
- Cellar Preparation: Preparing the cellar for harvest, including logistics and equipment setup.
- Fruit Handling: Receival of fruit (by forklift) and coordination of crush area, general logistics.
- Grape Pressing: Operating 4 grape presses, often two running simultaneously.
- Maceration and Fermentation: Executing maceration regimes at the winemaker's direction, providing feedback on fermentation management, monitoring Pinot noir fermentations, conducting native barrel fermentations in Chardonnay, and managing those fermentations.
- Wine Production: Draining and pressing.
- Knowledge Sharing: Learning about wines of the world and sharing great music.
Duration and Expectations
This position typically commences in late July, continues through mid-August, and may extend into late October or early November. As each harvest is unique, we encourage individuals to approach each day with a growth mindset and beginner's mind, ready to learn and develop their talents.
