Job Summary
The Animal Service Sergeant is responsible for the overall supervision and direction of the Animal Service Officer team. This position will primarily focus on patrol and general calls for service, ensuring compliance with animal welfare laws and ordinances. The sergeant will also assist in investigations, public education programs, and emergency response.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and coordinate the activities of the Animal Service Officer team, ensuring efficient and effective operations.
- Treats all animals humanely, properly and with compassion at all times.
- Maintains records of various impounds, heat maps of call types, vehicle records, and other analytical duties as assigned.
- Conducts investigations and issues citations for violations of State and County ordinances.
- Testifies in court, when compliance efforts fail against owners who disregard or violate ordinances.
- Operates an authorized vehicle in carrying out enforcement duties.
- Maintains all assigned equipment to ensure cleanliness and proper functioning.
- Respond to assistance request of officers on shift
- Conduct patrols to ensure compliance with animal welfare laws and ordinances, including licensing, leash laws, and noise ordinances.
- Provide public education on animal welfare issues, including responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter programs, and rabies prevention.
- Assist in the development and implementation of animal welfare policies and procedures.
- Coordinate with local law enforcement agencies and other community partners on animal-related issues.
- Participate in emergency response activities, such as animal rescues during natural disasters or other emergencies.
- Prepare and maintain accurate records, reports, and documentation related to investigations, enforcement actions, and public education activities.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree in animal science, criminal justice, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in animal welfare or law enforcement.
- Valid driver's license and a good driving record.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Knowledge of animal welfare laws and ordinances.
- Physical fitness to perform duties, including lifting animals and equipment.
- National Animal Control Association ACO Certification or law enforcement training preferred.
Additional Requirements:
- Must be available to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- Must be willing to work in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to handle stressful situations and make quick decisions.
- Performs related duties as required.
