PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises machinists, fabricators and/or technicians through all phases of fabrication meeting established schedules.
- Applies knowledge of fabrication planning, scheduling of workload, tooling requirements and machine maintenance to ensure a smooth flow of work through the department that meet schedule requirements.
- Applies knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement including SMED principles to minimize the COPQ and increase the throughput and efficiency of the department.
- Participates in designing and building tooling and fixtures needed for the fabrication process.
- Conducts daily team huddle to communicate goals and expectations focused on Safety, Quality, Delivery, Inventory, and Productivity.
- Maintains daily reports to measure key process indicators (KPI). Reviews data to develop and implement corrective action plans or recovery plans as needed.
- Identify and recommend new equipment and tools to improve quality and efficiency.
- Collaborates with other departments to ensure smooth production processes and promote teamwork.
- Manages employee performance to establish expectations, measures contributions and provides employee feedback, coaching, training, and instruction as required.
- Understands and applies company policies and procedures to respond to employee inquires.
- Actively supports and adheres to Pelican’s Safety Guidelines and actively participates and contributes to the Safety Management System.
- Participates in or leads the creation or improvement of safety standards as a core value of the business.
- Participates in or leads accident/near miss investigations defining the root cause and establishing corrective/ preventive action plans including implementation.
- Follows company policies and practices as outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or applicable employment agreement.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications include:
- Education: 2-year Associate Degree in Machine Tool Technology or other technical degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience working as a machinist, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Must demonstrate an in-depth working knowledge and complete understanding of machine shop principles, machine capabilities, concepts, regulations and practices.
- Ability to read, and interpret blueprints, schematics, technical models and drawings.
- Must possess leadership skills including communication, organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established schedules, deadlines, and commitments.
- Must be proficient with Mastercam CAD CAM software.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel, and Power Point.
- Strong problem solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with employees, vendors and customers at all levels.
- Excellent teamwork and teambuilding skills with proven ability to influence cross-functional teams.
- Actively supports and complies with Pelican’s objectives, guidelines and commitment to Quality and Safety, with an emphasis on continual improvement.
- Must have the ability to complete assignments within the timeframe specified by the Manager.
- Must be flexible regarding working hours. Must be able to work evenings and weekends, with or without advanced notice.
- Must be able to operate in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ensures that staff is contributing at maximum potential through rigorous hiring practices and an emphasis on training and development initiatives, including coaching and counseling direct reports in their performance and professional development, with final authority for approving pay increases, hiring decisions and disciplinary actions.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be constantly required to execute standard physical activities within the facility areas (i.e. stand, walk, sit, use hands/fingers).
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be occasionally required to execute non-standard physical activities within the facility areas (i.e. climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch).
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 70 pounds.
