WORK HOURS 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM; occasional evenings and weekends
POSITION PURPOSE
An employee in this class performs skilled locksmith work in the repair, alteration, installation and keying of locks in all district buildings and resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions from supervisor or senior maintenance workers
- Ability to read work orders, logs, diagrams and blueprints
- Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school district staff
- Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the installation and repair of locking systems and equipment
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Able to work with other crafts when needed
- Ability to exercise caution and care in judgement
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team and complete tasks
- Possess effective communication skills
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Related experience preferred
- Valid NC Driver’s License
- On the job training offered
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s license according to the State of NC requirements
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to work flexible hours (evenings, weekends)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prioritize and respond to all facility work orders in a timely manner
- Diagnose operational problems in locks, locking systems and door closure systems
- Install, open, clean, repair, replace and preform preventative maintenance on locks for doors, desks, file cabinets and various other equipment for the purpose of maintaining facilities in a safe, comfortable and operating condition
- Cuts new or duplicate keys for the purpose of providing the county with a master key system and ensuring security of its facilities
- Inspects facilities, systems and their components for the purpose of ensuring safety and identifying necessary repairs and providing an ongoing program of preventive maintenance
- Serve as the primary individual responsible for the security of district lock shop and all equipment related to the security of facility keys and locks
- Fabricates unique locks and locking devices for the purpose of meeting the specialized security problems within the district
- Performs minor repair or modifications to door and/or frame for the purpose of ensuring proper closing and security
- Re-keys locks and changes combinations for the purpose of ensuring security of facilities
- Coordinates with administration and other trades for the purpose of completing projects/work orders efficiently
- Maintains tools and/or equipment for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition
- Requests equipment and supplies for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items
- Assists other trades personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities
- Performs other related work as required
WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to work outdoors in weather conditions that range from hot and humid to cold
- Ability to work in air-conditioned buildings
- Ability to work off ladders, bend
- Ability to work at various heights (low to very high)
- Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects up to 50 pounds
- Ability to pull and/or push 100 pounds
- Ability to frequently kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, bend or crawl into awkward spaces
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Must be able to work in office and public school environments, and come into direct contact with staff and students
- Ability to work in air conditioned buildings
- Ability to work outdoors in cold, hot and humid conditions
- Travel is required to schools and Central Services offices
