Managing Editorial Assistant, G. P. Putnam’s Sons (Open to Remote)
Bookmaking at Penguin Random House seeks a Managing Editorial Assistant to join the team at G. P. Putnam’s Sons, an imprint of Penguin Publishing Group. The assistant's role is to provide administrative and project support for a Managing Editor and Executive Managing Editor on a wide-ranging list of commercial and literary fiction and nonfiction titles.
The Pu tnam imprint is home to an impressive list of bestselling action-adventure authors, including Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, and C. J. Box. Putnam published the megahit Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Also on its roster are romance and contemporary fiction authors Jill Santopolo, Sophie Cousens, Steven Rowley, Kiley Reid, and Alma Katsu. In addition to a wide range of fiction titles, Putnam proudly publishes dynamic nonfiction, including Capote’s Women by Laurence Leamer, which inspired the 2024 FX show FEUD: Capote vs. The Swans. Also featured on the nonfiction side are renowned Exactly Right Media podcast host Kate Winkler Dawson and New York Times bestselling author Jancee Dunn, among others.
Daily responsibilities include all-around support in creating over 100 titles a year and helping maintain a significant backlist. Working together as a team, the Putnam Managing Editorial department tracks schedules for manuscripts, cover design, and marketing materials to ensure each manuscript becomes a finished book out in the world. Managing editors consider everyone’s needs and negotiate to ensure a process works for everyone. This job is an exciting opportunity to get an overview of the publishing process and act as a point of contact with various departments across Putnam, including but not limited to art, editorial, production, design, and marketing.
The Managing Editorial Assistant should be highly motivated, superbly organized, and enthusiastic about bookmaking. We are looking for a detail-oriented, meticulous self-starter who is invested in the process of bringing books to a wide readership . The ideal candidate has strong analytical skills, communicates clearly, and will be an active participant in a collaborative team. The Role:
- Routing jacket and cover materials to other departments for approval and tracking due dates
- Assisting with mass-market and trade paperback conversions
- Reviewing titles up for reprint and compiling lists of cover and text corrections needed
- Watermarking files for editorial, marketing, publicity, and others as requested
- Assisting with NetGalley schedules
- Maintaining data in SAP and the FileMaker Pro database as needed
- Providing general administrative support to the Managing Editorial department , backing up colleagues, and assisting with special projects as needed
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks, take initiative, and follow up with colleagues
- Exceptional proofreading skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines and problem-solve creatively
- A team player with the ability to build relationships. A collaborative spirit is essential.
- Superb organizational and time management skills
