The Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) is a 24-bed postpartum unit providing couplet care for mothers and newborns, as well as low-risk antepartum patients. Our MBU nursing staff, obstetrical hospitalists, and neonatologists offer 24-hour, family-centered care.
Lactation services are provided by our board certified lactation consultants and supported by our nurses who have extensive breastfeeding training. Mothers at risk for postpartum hypertensive complications are counseled and enrolled in our post-discharge surveillance program, Heart Safe Motherhood.
Newborns are evaluated daily by pediatricians or neonatologists, and can be taken to our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) should further evaluation be needed or complications arise. Newborn care procedures include hearing screens, evaluation and management of hyperbilirubinemia, car seat testing, screening for critical congenital heart defects, and metabolic screening. Patient education is central to postpartum care and address topics such as newborn care, maternal care and recognition of early warning signs of possible postpartum complications. Collaboration with Princeton Health’s Community Wellness services is also initiated as needed.
Key Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assists nurses in the delivery of nursing care through participation in the nursing process.
- Demonstrates the knowledge and skill specific to a patient care technician (i.e. ADLs, patient hygiene, vital signs, obtaining weights; emptying and documenting of intake and output, obtaining blood sugar checks; positioning patients; lifting and turning patients; ambulation of patients.etc).
Scheduling Requirements:
- You will be required to work two day shifts per week (7am-7pm)
- You will also be required to work every third weekend.

Education
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
Related Work Experience
- Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant/Health Aid
- Not required but prefer six months of Nursing Assistant experience or currently enrolled in LPN/RN nursing program with successful completion of Nursing I.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
