Job Description Summary
To oversee and ensure compliance in order to safeguard the public health through enforcement and education of state, federal, and county regulatory programs and requirements such as: Food Protection, Private Water Supplies, Semi-Private Water Supplies, Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems, Lead Safe and Healthy Homes, Non-Community Public Water Supplies, Vector control, closed loop wells, and other Environmental Health related programs under the jurisdiction of the Peoria City/County Health Department. Assists with meeting and sustaining the National Voluntary Retail Food Program Standards. Ensures design, development, coordination, and implementation of training programs for the Division.
Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours in the basic sciences (state requirement) or a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Science from a National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC). Must have a minimum of 3 years relevant experience.
Prior teaching experience is preferred. Must be a Licensed Environmental Health Practitioner or obtained within 6 months of hire. IDPH Lead Risk Assessor License or be able to obtain within 6 months of hire. Must attend refresher training as necessary to maintain licensure. Knowledge of various training techniques is required. Must possess excellent problem solving and decision-making skills. Time management skills are essential. If applicable must attend orientation with IDPH within one year of employment. Must receive annual continuing education in each program (food program 5 hours/year, water program 3 hours/year, onsite wastewater program 3 hours/year) as applicable. Working knowledge of computers required. Must have excellent communication skills, both oral and written as well as strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain working relationships with other numerous outside agencies, and the public. Must also possess public speaking skills. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance, and access to reliable transportation. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
