Marketing Director

Perkins & Co
Portland, OR Full Time
POSTED ON 2/2/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 7/30/2025
We are Oregon's largest locally owned and #1 Most Admired public accounting firm, and we believe in igniting possibilities by helping our employees develop careers that fulfill their ambitions. We hire great people and give them a great place to work. Our secret to keeping them around is a positive culture, challenging and interesting work, and a dedication to continuous learning. Please don't be apprehensive about the fact that we're a CPA firm; this is not your stereotypical, old-fashioned, stuffy firm. Perkins is an incredible place to leverage your skills as a marketing leader.

Public accounting is demanding, which is why we prioritize a "people first" culture, which includes embracing and supporting remote work. We trust our people, so there's no need to micromanage schedules or scrutinize "butts in seats" to know that great work is getting done. In fact, over 20% of our employees are fully remote from outside of the Pacific Northwest.

However, due to the nature of the Marketing Director role, we are only considering local candidates who embrace a hybrid work model and will work in our downtown Portland office three days per week (preferably Tuesday - Thursday). If you live outside the area but plan to move to Portland soon, please be explicit about this on your resume or cover letter.

What will you do?

Our Marketing Director is a strategic position where you'll be a builder of process rather than a producer of content. You'll lead and develop the marketing team, fostering a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and professional growth. You and your team will collaborate with firm leadership, understanding key business objectives and aligning marketing efforts to drive measurable success. You'll leverage data analytics and technology to track key performance metrics and optimize marketing strategies for maximum impact, and you'll ensure brand consistency by overseeing all marketing communications and maintaining adherence to corporate messaging and design standards. Of course, you'll oversee the marketing budget and ensure efficient allocation of resources to various efforts. The firm will rely on you to monitor industry trends and regulatory shifts to proactively adapt marketing approaches and maintain competitive positioning.

Why you should or shouldn't apply.

Marketing encompasses many different types of work, not all of which will apply to this role. You could be a great fit if the following describes you:

  • You're excited about the opportunity to build up the marketing function and leave your mark as you rise to the challenge of meeting the firm's current and future needs. It won't be easy. The team has been working hard without adequate resources for years. Firm leadership is aware of the challenge and ready to invest, but you'll have to reestablish the reputation of the function.
  • You have several years of marketing leadership experience within a professional services firm (public accounting, legal, engineering, architecture, etc.—a firm that focuses on billable hours), ideally one generating $50M-$75M in annual revenue. If you don't have professional services experience, you have worked in a role that involved direct interaction and accountability to company owners/stakeholders like a Board of Directors.
  • You excel at communicating marketing strategies to executives and stakeholders
  • You have nurtured talent on your team, demonstrating success in leading and mentoring, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture.
  • You have strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills with an analytical approach to marketing effectiveness
  • You're comfortable with developing and documenting policies and procedures; it doesn't scare you that documentation is currently lacking
  • You have proficiency in marketing technology platforms such as Microsoft Office, Teams, HubSpot or other CRMs, Canva, and other relevant tools
  • You have project management skills that enable you to juggle multiple time-sensitive priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail and organization
  • You have a sense of humor, enjoy building relationships, and don't take yourself too seriously. The work we do is important, and we like to have fun in the process. We enjoy hanging out together whether that means we're working on a project or just goofing off

Please do not apply if:

  • You haven't been accountable for leading a marketing team in the past, including supervising a manager. We're looking for a seasoned leader in this role; we will not consider someone seeking their first senior leadership opportunity.
  • You won't be happy commuting to the Portland office 3 days per week, with at least 2 of those days being Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. The daily schedule is flexible, but the hybrid arrangement is not negotiable.
  • You're not enthusiastic about humbly taking on the challenge of rebuilding the marketing team and its reputation internally. If you're someone who wants to inherit a well-oiled machine and just keep it running, this is not the role for you.

What's in it for you?

You're still reading so there's something about this opportunity that resonates with you, but you're probably still asking yourself why you would choose this role instead of an easier one elsewhere. First, your contributions as Marketing Director will directly influence our firm's success, making this an opportunity to create meaningful impact. Second, you won't be dealing with layers of bureaucracy. You'll report to the COO and work directly with shareholders so there will be tremendous visibility to your team's results—it's an exciting chance to really show people what Marketing can do! Third, you'll work with smart, fun people who work hard and strive to deliver great results. The firm's reputation is stellar, and its history makes for great storytelling; your peer group of directors is collaborative and supportive; and your team is highly competent and resilient. Finally, as the firm grows and evolves, you'll have the opportunity to add positions to your team (we have a plan based on a recent external audit) and experience career progression yourself.

A company you'll feel proud to be part of and thrilled to market.

We don't like to brag, but we have some significant accolades under our belt—all thanks to our passionate teams. At Perkins, we feel good about our work and love that our community feels good about it, too.
