Overview
The Prevention Specialist is responsible for delivering a broad spectrum of community-based services aimed at preventing substance use disorders. This role involves collaboration with schools, parent-teacher groups, civic organizations, and the community to promote awareness and education about substance use issues.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Community Collaboration:
- Partner with schools, parent-teacher organizations, civic groups, churches, and youth organizations to disseminate information and raise awareness about substance use disorders.
- Network with regional prevention and social service agencies to ensure comprehensive service delivery, identify community needs, and facilitate appropriate referrals.
Public Awareness Campaigns:
- Actively participate in anti-substance use campaigns (e.g., Red Ribbon Week, Black Balloon Event, etc.) to engage the community and promote prevention messaging.
- Represent the agency at health fairs, business expos, parades, and other community events to share anti-substance use messages and resources.
- Collect and maintain statistics and demographic data for reporting and analysis.
Program Coordination:
- Facilitate summer programming activities ensuring engaging and educational experiences for participants.
- Organize and facilitate all prevention programming throughout the county.
- Assist in maintaining and updating the agency’s community resource list, ensuring accurate and accessible information for patients and community partners.
Experience and Qualifications
- Associate's degree is preferred; relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Current or ability to obtain Prevention Specialist Certification (e.g., Certified Prevention Specialist, or equivalent) within a specified timeframe (typically within 3 months of hire).
- Previous experience in community outreach, prevention programming, or related fields preferred.
