Summary Objective
Person County Government is seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and customer-focused individual for the full-time position of Transit Specialist within the Transportation Department (PATS). This position plays a crucial role in ensuring that elderly residents, as well as those who are transportation-deprived, and individuals with emotional, mental, and physical disabilities, of all ages, are provided safe, reliable, and timely transportation to their pre-arranged destinations.
As a Transit Specialist, you will be responsible for delivering transportation services to a diverse group of individuals, ensuring they arrive at their appointments, medical visits, work, or other essential locations without delay, all while maintaining a high standard of safety, customer service, and professionalism.

The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate's educational background and relevant work experience.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record per County policy.
This is a non-exempt position working 40 hours weekly/2080 hours annually.
Must pass a job functions test.
Essential Functions
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
- Cleans vehicle and performs Pre- and Post-trip inspections, ensuring assigned vehicle has oil, no flat tires, doors and handicap lift work properly, and all safety equipment is on the vehicle.
- Drives vehicles on assigned schedule/route that may vary on a daily basis to transport passengers to and from destination in a safe manner.
- Provides quality customer service to the riding passengers.
- Monitors and reports status and needs of the vehicles for maintenance and safety.
- Assists passengers, helping them get bags/packages on or off the vehicle, and those who have a walker or wheelchair.
- Maintains on-board safety equipment.
- Records mileage, number of passengers, times, and other required information on devices.
- Collects and keeps account of any fares or ride cards; prepares receipts for monies collected.
- Assists passengers with seat belts, getting in and out of vehicles as needed and required; operates wheelchair lifts as needed; secures wheelchairs, walkers, etc.
- Ensures the vehicle is clean and free of litter.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- Preference for one (1) year of commercial driving experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
- nce to OSHA requirements.
- Availability for emergency operations situations.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Person County conducts pre-employment screening on candidates. Job offers are conditional pending the following:
- A pre-employment drug screen for all candidates. Positions designated by Person County as Safety Sensitive are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- A background check for all candidates. Some positions also require a credit check.
- Additional screening and testing required for some positions.
