What are the responsibilities and job description for the Government Science Liaison position at PETA?
Position Objective:
To work with PETA’s Science Advancement and Outreach division to promote modern, animal-free biomedical research methods to replace experiments on animals in the U.S., particularly as it relates to research funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Present the sound scientific case for adoption of the principles of PETA scientists’ Research Modernization Deal to government and government-funded scientists and other decision makers
- Develop and implement science policy initiatives to meet the position objective
- Draft and consult on the content of letters, factsheets, white papers, reports, government comments, and other types of correspondence
- Present complex recommendations and represent the organization in dealings with federal agencies, public- and private-sector organizations, international forums, multinational companies, media, and advocacy and special-interest groups
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
- M.S. (preferred) or B.S. in a related field
- 3 years of experience in the fields of science, health, or public policy
- Demonstrated success working with decision-makers to shape policy
- 3 years of experience at the National Institutes of Health or other government agency preferred
- Familiarity with research, medical and scientific terminology strongly preferred
- Ability to conduct in-depth research on policy topics
- Proven exceptional written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to interact with government agencies and members of the public in a professional manner
- Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments
- Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to handle many issues simultaneously
- Ability and willingness to travel
- Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, a minimum of three years of driving experience, and a satisfactory driving record
- Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's position on the use of animals in experiments
- Commitment to the objectives of the organization
The salary range for this position is $90,000 - $111,322 annually. The ultimate salary within this range that will be offered to a qualified candidate will be determined based on the candidate’s experience and the cost of living in the area in which the candidate will live and work.
