Petra Cliffs Climbing Center and Mountaineering School is looking for a kayak instructor to join our team as the SumMAT Camp Kayak Specialist. This position helps facilitate outdoor educational adventure programming for ages 6 - 18 on our surrounding rivers, reservoirs, ponds and lakes. The summer season of June 9 - August 22 is a full time, seasonal position.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Communicating with counselors to discuss where and when to meet
- Arriving at the water site and setting up prior to the group’s arrival (dependent upon the day’s plan)
- Teaching basic paddling skills to camp participants
- General risk management appropriate for outdoor activities and in a river or lake location
- Storing, repairing, and quarantining boats, paddles, and type III PFDs (provided by Petra)
- Transporting a trailer with boats and equipment to and from water sites
- Maintain and enforce Petra Cliffs safety standards
Qualifications, Skills
- Confidence explaining water hazards, paddling skills, and emergency/rescue procedures
- Ability to work and interact with kids between the ages of 6 - 18
- Ability to provide a safe and fun experience for all participants
- Comfortable working outside in all weather conditions
- Comfortable improvising and shifting activities for the day to keep campers engaged
Required Experience
- Experience in paddling/water sports
- Experience working with kids of all ages and backgrounds
- Group facilitation
Required Licenses / Certifications
- Wilderness First Responder / CPR
- Swift Water Rescue Level 1 certification or equivalent
Compensation: Salary commensurate with education, training, and experience.

Pay: $130.00 - $135.00 per day
