What are the responsibilities and job description for the Freelance Interpreters On-Site in Twin Cities Area (Spoken Languages) position at PGLS?
The Language Banc (TLB) offers flexible, on-call work on an Independent Contractor basis. We are currently looking for freelance Interpreters in the Twin Cities available to provide in-person/face-to-face language interpretation services from EN<>All Languages at various locations throughout the metro area. (Spanish, Somali, Cambodian/Khmer, Arabic, Mandarin, and Vietnamese interpreters are strongly encouraged to apply.)
These are "1099" (Independent Contractor) positions with the Interpretation to take place on-site (OSI), via video (VRI), or over the phone (OPI), depending on our customers' specific needs.
Interpreter Functions
- Serve as Interpreter and facilitate effective communication between parties that do not speak the same language by converting one spoken language to another.
- Render messages from one language to another clearly and accurately, without omissions and additions, while maintaining message style, content, and context.
- Render sight translations of documents and other written materials as needed.
- Abide by the Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, maintain client confidentiality pursuant to protocols established by industry standards and HIPAA.
- Share relevant cultural information with all parties involved and assist all speakers in reaching a mutual understanding. Act as cultural broker when/if necessary.
Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Native fluency in English and another language
- Prior interpreting experience (formal or informal)
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Access to mobile phone and computer
- Reliable transportation and proof of insurance
- Up to-Date immunization records including but not limited to TB, MMR, Varicella, Hep B (or declination), TDAP
- Registration/active status on the MDH Interpreter Roster
- Must pass a criminal background check.
Desired but not required
- National Certification (CCHI/CMI or NBCMI)
- Certification of 40-hour interpreter training (Bridging the Gap, The Community Interpreter training, and/or any other 40-hour accredited interpreter training course).
