What are the responsibilities and job description for the Quality Engineer 2 position at PGT Custom Windows and Doors?
Performs inspections and sets quality assurance testing models for analysis of raw materials, in process materials, and finished products. Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within Quality. Relies on limited experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. Provides leadership to Quality Technicians and Administrators. Establishes standard work for direct reports and provides training to sustain improvement initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and mentoring to fellow Quality Team Members.
- Perform annual reviews for direct reports as well as act upon disciplinary actions if required.
- Identify improvement initiatives for area(s) of responsibility and create action teams and projects for direct reports to participate in and lead.
- Perform Quality validation/verification of new material and/or machines.
- Support defined area(s) of responsibility in quality events to include containment, root cause identification, and corrective action implementation.
- Can program manage small to medium projects ($300k max investment). Lead and facilitate a cross functional team and possibly external resources to meet launch deliverables on time and to budget.
- Lead/Support continuous improvement projects to drive performance to world class levels. Select improvement projects based on internal and customer metric performance to goal. Utilize best practice methodologies (trend/pareto/action, DMAIC, PDCA, etc.) to obtain results.
- Support initiatives related to Enterprise Solutions.
- Can effectively facilitate a team toward a goal and deliver results. Set objectives clearly, get buy-in and gain consensus cross functionally. Use action decks to set deliverables, assign accountability and meet commitments
- Ability to read blueprints and understand dimensioning and tolerance, understand basic geometric tolerance, standard callouts/symbols
- Defines, documents, implements and monitors quality plans for area(s) of responsibility.
- Develops and initiates standards and methods for inspection, testing, and evaluation.
- Devises sampling procedures and designs, and develops forms and instructions for recording, evaluating, and reporting quality and reliability data.
- Develop and perform process and product capability studies as required.
- Advises and confers with engineers in design review meetings to give capability findings and recommendations for improvement.
- Use failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) as a risk mitigation tool and to drive controls within area(s) of responsibility.
- Participate with engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
- Develop Quality Plans for new product introductions from customer requirements and specifications to ensure customer satisfaction and PGT profitability.
- Recommend modifications of existing quality or production standards to achieve optimum quality within limits of equipment capability.
- Ability to understand and improve complex mechanical systems, equipment, and tooling
- Support evaluation of field failures, including teardown of product, to determine root cause and develop corrective action.
- Implement statistical process control on critical product and process attributes within the value stream as required.
- Coach, mentor and lead Quality System Administrators and Technicians in sustaining and new product support within the Value Streams as required.
- Utilizes problem solving techniques (RCA, 5 why’s, 8D’s, Cause and Effect, etc.) to determine root cause and drive permanent corrective action.
- Continuous improvement of supplier quality and capability through direct involvement in their processes. Set expectations, train in best practices, hold supplier accountable through action decks and 8D process. Monitor and manage ongoing quality through Supplier Dashboard, DMR and CAR process.
- Develops and updates In Process and Final Out Audit Sheets to ensure alignment to customer quality requirements.
- Monitors, and presents Quality Charts to area(s) of responsibility in order to resolve internal and external issue.
- Develops and makes visual displays depicting good and bad parts, e.g. acceptable and unacceptable metal.
- Quarantines and oversees disposition of non-compliant material and devises methods to assess cost and responsibility.
- Provides training to production workers to help identify defective raw materials and finished goods.
- Assist other Quality Systems department personnel by covering other areas of PGT when necessary
- Support Supply Chain in new supplier selection, qualification, and improvement initiatives.
- Lead and support qualification of new products and components, suppliers, processes and equipment. Includes validation testing and verification of performance to requirements using statistical methods (PPAP, MCI, Cpk, etc). Provide concepts for measuring gage design
- Maintain certifications and host third party audits. Develop and support internal audits to ensure compliance to quality standards. Maintain records of compliance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Will be responsible for the safety, mentoring, training, and compliance to PGT policies and procedures of the following team members within their area(s) of responsibility:
Quality Administrators - Level 1
Quality Administrators - Level 2
Quality Technicians

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
ASQ - Certified Quality Engineer
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
B.S. Degree or a degree in a technically related field is strongly preferred Equivalent of two to four years of related experience.
In-depth knowledge of PGT manufacturing processes and products
Knowledge of Microsoft Office and statistical software such as Minitab
Ability to lead and facilitate cross functional teams
Ability to coach and mentor direct reports in order to create a self sufficient team
Ability to communicate across all levels of the business both written and verbal
Need to be self directed to meet needs of the area(s) of responsibility
Ability to work in a fast paced manufacturing environment
Familiar with Lean Manufacturing Concepts
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
High level of professionalism in all communications.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Proficient in college-level mathematics relevant to degree obtained
Technical math skills including trigonometry, geometry, and common algebra.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Word, Excel, Access, Project, PowerPoint. Can perform analysis and modeling using Excel or other software. Beginner to intermediate level of proficiency.
