DIRECTOR of CURRICULUM and INSTRUCTION JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Director of Curriculum and Instruction
SUPERVISES: Programs and personnel to be determined by the Superintendent
JOB GOAL: Directs the planning, delivery, assessment, and ongoing improvement of curriculum and instruction programs. Oversees and implements all programs pertaining to curriculum and instruction, in initiating positive change, in instructional decision-making, and in supervising the use of best practices.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree or higher, minimum 3 years of successful leadership/administrative experience preferred. Must have Administrative/Teacher Leader/Supervision endorsement, must be an ALSDE certified teacher/administrator evaluator, minimum of 5 years teaching experience, successful experience in at least one of the specialty areas listed below, and such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate.
REPORTS TO: The Superintendent of Schools
SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:
1. Oversees all Title Federal Programs in the district.
2. Develops, implements, and coordinates the school district’s K-12 curriculum.
3. Assists in the planning and organizing of professional development activities consistent with state PLU requirements and local school improvement plans.
4. Prepares budgets and allocations for assigned program(s).
5. Authorizes purchase orders and payment requests for programs assigned.
6. Plans, organizes, and implements district-wide programs for training substitute teachers, instructional aides, and other paraprofessionals.
7. Oversees the development of curriculum guides and distribution of the Alabama Courses of Study.
8. Keeps the schools apprised and up-to-date on changing instructional and curriculum policies and procedures.
9. Maintains contact with administrators and department heads through frequent visitation of schools and meetings.
10. Conducts annual needs assessments and Continuous Improvement Plans for each school.
11. Works with principals and school administration to develop and implement identified goals and objectives in annual Continuous Improvement Plans as well as requirements for accrediting agencies.
12. Collects and analyzes school achievement data to determine progress toward identified school goals and objectives in order to drive instruction and educational decisions.
13. Assists principals and school administration in implementing sound instructional, management, and supervisory practices.
14. Provides leadership for the implementation of the teacher and administrator evaluation program.
15. Assists principals in the area of communication with staff, students, community, and other administrators.
16. Attends all Board of Education regularly scheduled meetings. In addition, attends all special called meetings as required by the Superintendent.
17. Observes teachers in their classrooms intermittently and upon request by the principal or Superintendent in order to offer insight for the improvement of the teaching and learning situation.
18. Develops and coordinates all research projects conducted in the district by outside agencies, making a prior determination of the appropriateness of such research.
19. Coordinate the placement of university lab students and interns.
20. Oversees the implementation of the teacher retention and mentoring program.
21. Performs such other tasks, duties, and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Superintendent.

Occasionally, yet essential to this position, the individual must meet deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and staff. Occasionally, the position requires the employee to work irregular or extended work hours, direct responsibility for the safety, well-being and work output of other people and meet multiple demands from several people.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary shall be negotiable and paid consistent with the System’s approved salary schedule, which includes but is not limited to, experience and credentials. Length of work year and hours of employment shall be established by the system.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Superintendent or his/her designee consistent with the Alabama State Department of Education’s evaluation system.
