PRINCIPAL - SECONDARY JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Principal - Secondary
SUPERVISES: All staff members: Certified and Classified
JOB GOAL:
To use leadership, supervisory, and administrative skills in promoting the educational development of each student.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possess Alabama Certification Rank I.
- Proper endorsement in School Administration and Supervision.
- Three years of successful teaching experience.
- Knowledge of secondary curriculum areas served.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board might find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools
SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:
- Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school.
- Plan, organize and direct implementation of all school activities.
- Keep the Superintendent informed of the school’s activities and accomplishments, as well as its problems.
- Prepare and administer the school budget and approve all school expenditures.
- Supervise the maintenance of all required building records and reports.
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of reports, records, lists, and all other paperwork required or appropriate to the school’s administration.
- Assume responsibility and provide effective leadership for the school’s curriculum and instructional program.
- As directed by the Superintendent, work with various members of the Central Management staff on school problems of more than in school import, such as transportation, special services, and the like.
- Interpret and enforce all district policies and administrative regulations.
- Maintain active relationships with students and parents.
- Budget school time to provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
- Supervise the school’s total educational program.
- Lead in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program.
- Schedule classes within established district guides in order to meet student needs.
- Assist in the development, revision and evaluation of the curriculum.
- Supervise the guidance program to enhance individual student test scores and overall development.
- Establish and maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to due process to the rights of students/parents.
- Establish guidelines for proper student conduct and maintaining student discipline.
- Attend special events held to recognize student achievement , and attend school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.
- Maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities.
- Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
- Assume responsibility for the attendance, conduct, and health maintenance of students.
- Assume responsibility for his/her own professional growth and development through membership and participation in the affairs of professional organization, through attendance at regional, state, and national meetings, through enrollment in advanced courses, and the like.
- Advise, supervise, and evaluate all classified and certified personnel attached to the school in accordance with existing Board policy on certified and classified personnel.
- Assist Central Management personnel in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating the school’s entire staff.
- Supervise daily the school’s teaching process.
- Develop the master teaching schedule and approve any special teaching assignments.
- Orient newly assigned staff members and assist in their development.
- Conduct meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school and to keep members informed of policy changes, new programs and the like.
- Assist in the inservice orientation and training of teachers, with special responsibility for staff administrative procedures and instructions.
- Recommend, according to established Board policy, the nonrenewal or dismissal of any staff member whose work is unsatisfactory.
- Represent the school in the yearly state and regional accreditation process.
- Make arrangements for special conferences between parents and teachers.
- Assume responsibility for the safety and administration of the school plan.
- Supervise the daily use of the school facilities for both academic and nonacademic purposes.
- Plan and supervise fire drills and emergency preparedness programs.
- Assert positive leadership in times of civil disobedience in school in accordance with established Board policy.
- Provide for all fixed asset inventories under his/her jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property.
- Supervise and evaluate the school’s extracurricular programs that outgrowths of the school’s curriculum.
- Participate in principals’ meetings and other such meetings as are required or appropriate.
- Cooperate with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
- Respond to written and oral requests for information.
- Assume responsibility for all official correspondence and news releases.
- Establish and maintain favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs; to interpret Board policies and administrative directives; and to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
- Serve as a member of committees and attend meetings as directed by the Superintendent.
- Delegate authority to reliable personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the principal.
- Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of modern school secondary education and the ability to apply them to the needs of the school.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and trends.
- Ability to plan and organize effectively.

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and the Board of Education policies.
