Job Description

At the Phillies, we want our biomechanics lab to be a hub of self-improvement and innovation—a place where every visit brings players and staff closer to achieving greatness. As a Lab Associate, you will play a key role in maintaining this environment, working alongside our staff to ensure the lab operates efficiently and delivers insights that drive player development.

Your primary role will focus on operating, calibrating, and troubleshooting motion capture and force plate systems to ensure accurate and reliable data collection. You'll also assist in helping analyze raw data, transforming nuanced information into meaningful insights for coaches and players. By combining your technical skills with a passion for biomechanics and baseball, you'll help ensure the lab is a cornerstone of player improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Energize: Help create a well-organized and motivating environment for players and coaches.
  • Operate: Calibrate and troubleshoot motion capture systems, force plates, and other lab technologies.
  • Test: Assist with experiments that test foundational theories about the game of baseball.
  • Build: Help us create reports and tools that support player development stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Organizational Skills: Proven ability to maintain an efficient and well-organized biomechanics lab, ensuring smooth daily operations.
  • Communication Skills: Strong interpersonal skills to foster a welcoming environment and effectively translate technical findings into actionable insights for coaches and players.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience working with biomechanics or performance data using scripting languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
  • Collaboration: A team-oriented mindset with a willingness to take on diverse tasks and contribute to the success of complex projects.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data Visualization: Experience with interactive tools (e.g., Dash, Streamlit, Shiny), report generation (e.g., pypdf2), and data visualization (e.g., plotly)
  • Educational Background: Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Sports Science, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Predictive Modeling: Skilled in model selection, feature engineering, validation, and performance evaluation for generating actionable insights.
  • Biomechanics Knowledge: An understanding of human movement and biomechanics principles.
  • Baseball Knowledge: Familiarity with player development and performance metrics in baseball.

What We Offer

  • Access To The Cutting Edge: Exposure to advanced tools and proprietary data.
  • Dynamic Team Environment: Work with a team committed to excellence.
  • Personal Growth: Learn from colleagues within a supportive and driven environment.

You will be required to answer the following question along with the submission of your application:

  • While assisting with a data collection session, you notice something unusual in a player's movement patterns that might indicate a potential issue. How would you communicate this observation to stakeholders? Are there specific sources of information or steps you'd review before sharing your findings?
  • In your view, what defines a successful performance lab? Please list three KPIs you would create to objectively measure the success of a lab's daily operations.

The Phillies are proud to be an equal opportunity employer, and are committed to growing a workforce diverse in perspective and background. We proudly strive to build a group of employees who represent the fans and communities we currently, and aim to serve.
