Summary : Work in partnership with Andover’s certified / licensed athletic training team to provide comprehensive sports healthcare to all Academy students. The Assistant Athletic Trainer will provide athletic training services (injury prevention, treatment and rehabilitation along with sideline injury care, game day coverage). Generally, the schedule will be Mon-Sat, depending on the needs of the department and athletic schedule. This is a full-time, exempt staff position and is considered an essential employee.
QUALIFICATIONS :
Certificates / License : Certification by the NATABOC to qualify for a Massachusetts State License to practice.
Education : BS. Athletic Training; Master’s Degree preferred.
Physical and Personal : The candidate should be detail-oriented, not only in developing appropriate rehabilitative plans, but also keeping meticulous records of patient progress. The AT should demonstrate strong interpersonal skills while working one-on-one with patients on a regular basis. This position requires compassion for the injured student while employing sound skills in communicating with patients and parents alike. The candidate must have the physical stamina and strength to work on their feet throughout the day, lift patients, as well as carry athletic training equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
1. Provide athletic training services to Phillips Academy students as directed by Medical Director.
2. Applied Knowledge : Athletic trainers must have knowledge of a large range of medical problems. Assessment, evaluation skills and working with other healthcare professionals will be required.
- Decision-Making Skills : Ability to think critically and make independent decisions regarding the assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return to play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
- Attention to Detail : Athletic trainers should be thorough and detailed with injury tracking and documentation.
3. Provide athletic training services to Phillips Academy student-athletes under supervision of Director of Athletic Training
Athletic Training Services – The management and provision of care of injuries to a physically active person as defined in the state practice act with the direction of a licensed physician. The term includes the rendering of emergency care, development of injury prevention programs and providing appropriate preventative and devices of the physically active person. The term also includes the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation and recondition of the physically active person whose conditions are within the professional preparation and education of a certified athletic trainer. The term also includes the use of modalities such a mechanical stimulation, heat, cold, light, air, water, electric sound, massage and the use of therapeutic exercises, reconditioning exercise and fitness programs. – National Athletic Trainers Association
4. Oversee Assigned Training Room space :
5. Act as liaison between physicians, specialists, Sykes Wellness Center, coaches, athletes and their parents.
6. Maintain accurate records of injuries and treatment / rehabilitation programs within the Academy’s electronic medical record system.
7. Work with athletic training staff to provide coaches with information on athletes medically eligible to compete under Phillips Academy policies and state regulations.
8. Assist Director of Athletics and athletic training staff as requested.
9. In the event that the Director of Athletic Trainer is unavailable, an Assistant Athletic Trainer may take on leadership role in regard to decision-making and implementation of the policies and procedures for the athletic training staff.
10. Maintain active license in good standing to practice Athletic Training in the state of Massachusetts.
11. Coordinate evidence-based, targeted prevention programs / education.
Preferred Experience : Five years working as an Athletic Trainer, preferably with high school-aged students.
