Position Overview and Responsibilities
In keeping with our mission to educate the “whole person,” St. John’s Prep offers a full complement of interscholastic and recreational athletic opportunities for students in grades 6 through 12. Athletic trainers report to the Director of Athletics and serve as integral members of our Athletic Department. This position covers a family leave from August 15 through December 1. The athletic trainer’s schedule will include evening and weekend work.
Advise athletes and coaches on matters pertaining to conditioning, diet, rest, exercises, re-conditioning and other related health matters.
Administer IMPACT testing.
Advise athletes and coaches in methods of prevention of athletic injury.
Provide pre-practice and pre-game taping and wrapping.
Attend all home athletic events and travel with teams when needed.
Provide first aid care for injuries sustained during practice sessions and games.
Evaluate and determine whether an athlete injured during a practice or game may continue to participate.
Employ proper preventive and safety measures before transporting an injured student to a physician or hospital by approved conveyance. Notify the parents of an injured athlete taken to a physician or hospital as soon as possible.
Carry out physician’s orders (team or private) regarding treatment of injury.
Review written permission by physician (team or private) before allowing a student under treatment to practice or play.
Keep a record of athletic injuries, including name, date, diagnosis, recommended treatment and physician’s recommendation regarding student’s participation.
Follow communication protocol established for student-athletes who sustain injuries.
Manage training room supplies, including inventory, maintenance, record of use, and labeling.
Prepare and process medical supplies order for the following year.
Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff, school nurses, Athletic Department staff, and School leadership.
Participate in wellness programs and/or committees.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics and/or Principal.
Qualifications, Education, and Experience
Ability to communicate effectively with middle school/high school age students and their parents.
Flexibility and patience. Self-motivation and ability to complete job assignments without direct supervision are key. Interruptions of work are routine.
Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm.
Team-oriented.
Organized and detail-oriented.
Competency with ImPACT testing.
Competency with Google Suite Suite and database programs.
Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university.
Maintain current NATA Certification and Massachusetts Licensure.
Maintain current CPR and First Aid Certification.
Physical Requirements:
Standing/sitting for long periods of time.
Bending, lifting, pushing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, stooping.
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
Must be able to reach at and above shoulder height to access higher areas of equipment, etc.
Must be capable of adapting to frequent changes in position throughout the workday.
Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone.
Use of hands and fingers for manipulation, and using computer keyboard, educational tools, play equipment, and perform first aid and CPR.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
Work environment will include a variety of indoor and outdoor surfaces, climates and weather conditions.
