Position Purpose

Provides a broad range of support services and programming to adults and students who frequent the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), particularly those with marginalized and/or intersecting identities related to race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, class, ability, and first-generation status. The intern will support the mission of the Office by assisting in helping to organize and execute OMA sponsored activities, aiding in formatting and editing the Office newsletter, and directly supervising student proctors who work in the office.

Job Responsibilities

Student Support and Programming

  • Assists with 3-day International Student Orientation (ISO) or The Exeter Equitable Experience (E³)
  • Maintains social media pages for the Office. Keeps up to date on the type of social media that PEA students are using, and adds other forms of social media as needed.
  • Assists the Office in planning activities for various Heritage and History Months/Weeks, for example: Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month, LGBTQ History Month; Transgender Awareness Week, Women’s History Month, etc.
  • Assists with events put on by OMA sponsored groups (for example the Asian Student Mixer or International Tea, Black Fashion Show) as the need arises.
  • Chaperone for student conferences (e.g. Student Diversity Leadership Conference, Social Justice Training Institute, Youth Action Project).
  • May advise OMA club.
  • May have assigned advisees in the second year of 2-year appointment.

Other

  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending trainings, courses, or conferences, as needed or required.
  • Directly through work in OMA, the intern will contribute to a learning, living, and working environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and the development of skills to engage with those of different backgrounds.
  • Lives in a dorm as a member of the residential faculty, provides dormitory service, and may coach a sport(s) and/or lead other extracurricular activities.
  • Assists with chaperoning duties for OMA sponsored events, either on- or off- campus.

  • A strict adherence to confidential policies.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed.
  • High degree of organizational skills with the ability to be flexible and multi-task with accuracy.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written directions and maintain a professional demeanor and restraint, even during stressful situations.

Position Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience in fields such as Student Development, Counseling, Social and Behavior Sciences, and Liberal Arts desirable but not required.

Experience

  • 2 years’ experience/volunteerism in diversity, equity, or inclusion leadership, internship, or activities. Familiarity with residential boarding schools and/ or with adolescents preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with or mentoring students of color, students with high financial need, students who are the first in their families to attend college, and students who are members of the LGBTQ community. Sound judgement, awareness, and sensitivity to the interests and concerns of these populations.
  • Demonstrated experience in collaboratively working with students, faculty, and administrators and other campus offices to support and expand cultural competence.
  • Experience with and understanding of contemporary adolescent/student development issues, trends, and best practices.
  • Proven experience in supporting programs, services, and activities to support the academic and social enrichment of students.
  • Facility with the utilization of technology, marketing, or social media to promote objectives.
  • Must possess a record of service that identifies concern for the safety and well-being of others.
  • Language proficiency in Spanish helpful, but not required.

  1. Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
  2. Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
