What are the responsibilities and job description for the Simulation Engineer Intern - FEA Benchmarking position at PhysicsX?
PhysicsX is a deep-tech company with roots in numerical physics and Formula One, dedicated to accelerating hardware innovation at the speed of software.
We are building an AI-driven simulation software stack for engineering and manufacturing across advanced industries. By enabling high-fidelity, multi-physics simulation through AI inference across the entire engineering lifecycle, PhysicsX unlocks new levels of optimization and automation in design, manufacturing, and operations — empowering engineers to push the boundaries of possibility. Our customers include leading innovators in Aerospace & Defense, Materials, Energy, Semiconductors, and Automotive.
The role: As a Simulation Engineer Intern, you will join us over summer 2025, and play a crucial role in benchmarking performance and accuracy for a suite of FEA solvers, for example, you may be responsible for comparing open source FEA solver, Calculix to NX NASTRAN and ABAQUS. This exciting opportunity will allow you to gain hands on experience with industry-leading engineering software while contributing to important comparative analyses that can influence our software selection processes. By incorporating open-source FEA packages such as Calculix into our workflows, we enhance our capabilities, reduce costs, and promote innovation, ultimately leading to more comprehensive and flexible engineering solutions. Join us in this dynamic role, where your insights and contributions will help shape the future of our engineering solutions and push the boundaries of innovation in the field!
\n- Collaborate with the simulation team to define benchmarking criteria and test cases for FEA simulations.
- Set up, execute, and validate simulations using open source FEA package Calculix and NX NASTRAN on various engineering scenarios (e.g., structural, thermal, dynamic analyses).
- Analyze results to assess the accuracy and performance of both software packages.
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations to communicate findings, including graphical representations of data and key insights.
- Assist with documentation and contribute to the optimization of benchmarking procedures.
- Stay updated on advancements in FEA software and methodologies relevant to the benchmarking process.
- Currently pursuing a PhD (or Masters) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Familiarity with finite element analysis concepts and applications.
- Basic understanding of FEA software, preferably experience with Calculix or NX NASTRAN.
- Proficiency in programming or scripting languages (e.g., Python) is mandatory.
- Experience using High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments and Unix/Linux operating systems is a plus.
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
This is a paid internship opportunity from June 2025 - August 2025, based in our NYC office. Compensation will be discussed with selected candidates.
