This position is a Product Line Manager position within the Technical Review Section of the Development Services Division. You will have oversight of our Residential and Commercial teams of interdisciplinary review staff comprised of Planners, Engineers, and Building Plans Examiners while collaborating with our partners within the Health Department, Fire Prevention Bureau, and other PPW Divisions. You will be responsible for the consistent implementation of County Codes while providing excellent customer service. Throughout the onboarding process you will meet with department leadership, including the Building Official and the Technical Review Manager to discuss expectations and set goals for your teams and introduce you to the current policies and procedures, software, and Pierce County Code. Pierce County offers a formal leadership training program for all supervisors and managers as well as opportunities for professional development throughout your career. Coaching and mentoring will be provided by the Building Official and other section managers to ensure your success.
Core Daily Responsibilities:
- Manage the workflow for the construction product lines within the Technical Review Section, including management of three supervisors for Residential and Commercial teams.
- Determine work procedures; prepare work schedules and determine methods of expediting workflow; assign, review, and approve the work of subordinate staff.
- Monitor hiring, training, scheduling and assignment of employees.
- Facilitate and participate in training for building plans examiners.
- Investigate grievances involving subordinates and recommend resolution; recommend hiring, promotional and disciplinary actions; approve leave requests and overtime; assure adequate coverage during staff absences.
- Conduct performance evaluations and develop performance measures and standards.
- Track progress of plan reviews for timeliness and compliance.
- Assist the Building Official in developing building code policies, procedures and provide input on the division’s policy and procedure manual and reference library.
- Assist with preparing and monitoring the annual budget.
- Participate in the development and coordination of training programs for staff, citizens and industry groups.
- Assist in preparing and reviewing various codes and code amendments including staff reports and committee presentations.
- Act as the Building Official in his/her absence or as designated.
- Assist in interpreting code requirements.
- Bachelor’s Degree in business, architecture, engineering, public administration, or other applicable degree; AND
- Three years of supervisory experience in technical review, permit coordination, code enforcement, or inspection administration OR
- Additional education and experience which clearly indicates the ability to perform the essential functions of the classification may substitute on a year for year basis

- Current International Code Council (ICC) Certification(s)
- Certification as a Building Official by the ICC is required within one year of selection as Assistant Building Official

Salary : $104,934 - $135,064
