What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transit System Maintenance Worker position at Pierce Transit?

We are currently recruiting for a conscientious and detail oriented Transit System Maintenance Worker (Route Custodian) to join the Facilities Maintenance Division in Lakewood.

Some of the regular duties in this position will include:
- Following an assigned route to perform custodial work.
- Ensuring cleanliness at bus shelters, seating areas at bus stops and transit centers, emptying trash cans, washing windows, walls, and restrooms and replenishing supplies.
- Conducting an array of custodial work in and around Pierce Transit buildings and adjacent grounds.

All employees of Pierce Transit are required to participate in the Washington State Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Pierce Transit offers two Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) plans to choose from, PERS2 and PERS3, as well as a matching program for 457 deferred compensation.
Employees are not covered under the Social Security System except for a 1.45% payment for Medicare.
Pierce Transit provides an ORCA Card benefit for each employee and a family member. This benefit provides free access to service on Pierce Transit, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, King County Metro, Kitsap Transit, Seattle Monorail, Seattle Streetcar, King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Foot Ferry.
Shift differential:
Employees are eligible for differential pay per the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local #758 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
PAID LEAVE:
Full-time Pierce Transit employees are eligible to receive 11 paid holidays, 2 personal paid holidays, 12 days of sick leave, 12 vacation days per year, and the ability to earn up to 2 Wellness Days by participating in a qualifying wellness activity and the annual survey. Part-time employees, receive pro-rated leave, to include sick leave, vacation, personal holiday and holiday pay. Vacation leave accrual rates increase per the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreement.

- Cleaning seating areas at bus stops and transit centers, emptying trash cans, washing windows, walls, and restrooms and replenishing supplies.
- Sweeping, mopping, and polishing floors.
- Operating a pressure washer to clean structures, pavement, and equipment.
- Cleaning walkways and grounds adjacent to assigned buildings.
- Ensuring that rubbish, weeds, and wastepaper are removed.
- Sweeping parking lots.
- Shoveling snow and spreading sand in parking lots and transit centers as needed.
- Cleaning work areas and equipment after completion of job assignment.
- Has regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Qualifications Include:
One year of experience performing the duties of a laborer, janitor, or custodian
OR
An equivalent combination of experience and training.
AND
Possess a valid Washington State driver's license.
Knowledge & Abilities:
The individual selected for this position will be required to possess the knowledge of:
- Appropriate care and use of mops, brooms, scrub brushes, power sweepers and scrubbers, dusters, vacuum cleaners, and floor polishers.
- Proper use of cleaning materials such as soaps, powders, strippers, polishes, waxes, and graffiti removers.
And the ability to:
- Work non-traditional work hours and days as scheduled.
- Lift up to 50 pounds intermittently.
- Work well alone and in a team environment.
- Understand and follow oral or written instructions.
- Learn all equipment operations.
- Perform computerized work order methods and procedures.
- Pass a job-related examination.
- Drive all job-related vehicles and maintain a valid Washington State driver's license.
Working Conditions:
- Must be willing to work any shift (assignment to swing shift, graveyard and/or weekends likely).
- Subject to exposure to fumes, dust and high levels of vibration.
- Subject to exposure to high noise levels requiring ear protection.
- Subject to working near moving parts of heavy machinery and high voltage equipment where the use of appropriate protective/safety equipment is required.
- Subject to working at heights and in adverse weather conditions.
- Work includes indoor and outdoor environment.
