The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) reports directly to the SVP / Chief Medical Officer / Chief Strategy Officer, with a dotted line to the President of PHP and HMS. The primary physician leader responsible for overseeing functions related to the quality of care, access, productivity, and performance of PHP Medical Group operations, in coordination with the VP of Group Operations. The CMO, in coordination with the COO of HMS, directs and oversees the daily operations of the IPA, as well as all functions related to MSO functions like utilization management, quality management, and claims. On occasion, may provide direct care services at any PIH Health Hospital or Clinic.

This position requires a deep understanding of medical group operations, medical management, care management, and peer review. Must have proven expertise in quality management, safety, and clinical effectiveness. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the CMO is accountable for leading in a manner consistent with the organization’s mission, values, leadership model, and customer service philosophy; assists the VPs and System CMO in developing and implementing programs, policies, and procedures, including physician recruitment that spans the continuum of care from ambulatory to inpatient and post-acute. With the focus to achieve strategic objectives and assure that the overall quality of medical care delivered meets or exceeds current medical standards, both in substance and in perception, all the while keeping in line with pertinent health plan policies, guidelines, and benefits. Will demonstrate excellent listening and communication skills to lead the group culture to achieve and sustain excellent performance.

Responsibilities :

  • Extensive experience practicing medicine.
  • Proven expertise in medical management.
  • Knowledge and expertise in change management.
  • Strong working knowledge of current ambulatory healthcare industry, as well as managed care experience working with Department of Managed Care.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical issues to medical staff, department chairs, Vice Presidents, hospital leaders, and Chief Operating Officer.
  • Efficient management skills that emphasize mentoring, training, and team building.
  • Strong facilitation skills.
  • Leads by example.
  • Develop a culture of excellence.
  • Collaborate with all PHP providers to create a shared vision of excellence.
  • Coordinates the sharing of pertinent information with each provider so they can be successful.
  • Provides needed resources to support each provider in meeting or exceeding their expectations.
  • Deal effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Handle multiple priorities.
  • Good organizational skills.

Required :

  • Extensive experience practicing medicine or surgery.
  • Previous management experience.
  • A current California state medical license. Board certified in appropriate specialty.
  • Executive management to include three (3) years of experience in hospital or medical group management.
  • Prior medical administration experience in multispecialty groups.
  • IPA and Managed Care Experience.
  • Knowledge of CMS regulations, Department of Health Services health plan regulatory agency requirements, and specific expertise in utilization management, care management, quality management, and credentialing standards.
  • Preferred :

  • Proven record of accomplishment working as a CMO, for a minimum of three years.
  • Masters of Business Administration or Masters in Health Administration.
  • LEAN training.
