Job Overview
The Camp Medic is essential to maintaining a safe, healthy environment for campers and staff. This role involves providing first aid and emergency care, managing the camp’s infirmary, administering medications, and responding to any medical concerns that arise. The Camp Medic works closely with the camp leadership team to implement safety protocols and educate staff on health and wellness practices. In addition to handling routine and emergency medical needs, the Camp Medic maintains detailed health records, communicates with parents as necessary, and coordinates with local medical providers when additional care is needed. This position requires a WFR certification and at least three years of nursing school. The Camp Medic plays a vital role in creating a positive, secure camp experience for everyone on site. The Medic must live at camp for the entirety of the summer season, which is about 9 weeks.
Duties
- Manage and address the daily medical needs of campers and staff (primarily simple first aid).
- Accompany campers and staff members to hospital visits, urgent care appointments, and other off-campus appointments.
- Attend to medical emergencies at camp with the support of the camp leadership team.
- Supervise and manage the distribution of daily camper and staff medications.
- Advise the Camp Director on medical situations that arise, including campers injured on overnight camping trips or larger-scale illness outbreaks (e.g. lice, stomach bugs, etc.).
- Foster a positive camp culture by promoting teamwork, respect, and inclusivity.
- Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and fellow staff members regarding camper health needs and progress.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of camp medical facilities and equipment.
Experience
Candidates should have experience or knowledge in the following areas to enhance their effectiveness as Camp Medic:
- Anatomy knowledge to assist in understanding camper health needs.
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations to ensure confidentiality of camper information.
- Background in diagnostic evaluation can be beneficial when assessing camper needs.
- Understanding of aliment care for campers requiring special dietary considerations.
- Experience in inpatient settings can provide valuable insights into camper care.
Qualifications
- At least three years of nursing school
- Wilderness First Responder certification (can obtain this during pre-camp staff training)
Compensation
The compensation for this role starts at $4,625 for the summer season, which equates to about $530 per week. This salary accounts for room and board as well, as this is a role that requires the medic to live at camp.
