Job Overview
Distinguished by its program, small enrollment, and unique freshwater island location, Pine Island Camp has offered fun, traditional camp activities since 1902 in a rustic setting that develops a boy’s independence, imagination and character. PIC seeks a responsible, skilled, and safety-conscious Riflery Instructor for the summer of 2025. This individual will oversee our riflery program, ensuring the safe operation of the range and fostering a supportive learning environment for boys aged 9-15. Responsibilities include teaching proper shooting techniques for .22 rifles, range safety protocols, and firearm care, while instilling confidence, discipline, and respect in campers. The ideal candidate has experience in riflery instruction, certification in range safety or NRA qualifications (or willingness to obtain them), and enjoys working with children in a collaborative, unplugged, outdoor setting. Candidates have the option of commuting to this position and working just during activity periods, or committing to a full summer experience and living at camp for the entirety of the summer season. This year's season runs from June 14th to August 13th.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily riflery activities, including instructing campers on proper shooting techniques, range safety protocols, and firearm maintenance.
- Ensure compliance with all safety standards by monitoring range operations, maintaining equipment, and enforcing rules to create a secure environment.
- Plan and lead engaging lessons and activities, catering to campers of varying skill levels, from beginners to more experienced shooters.
- Maintain the riflery range and equipment, including regular inspections, cleaning, and inventory management.
- Foster a positive and supportive learning environment, promoting sportsmanship, confidence, and respect among campers.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Experience in riflery instruction, shooting sports, or a similar discipline; prior camp experience is a plus.
- Certification in range safety, NRA Instructor credentials, or willingness to obtain certification before the summer season.
- Strong ability to work with children and teens, demonstrating patience, enthusiasm, and effective communication skills.
- Commitment to safety and a proactive approach to ensuring compliance with all rules and regulations.
Compensation:
Compensation will depend on whether the candidate commutes or lives at camp. Commuters who work partial days will be compensated at an hourly rate, while full-time counselor who live and work at camp for the entire season will be paid a set seasonal salary.
