Job Overview
Distinguished by its program, small enrollment, and unique freshwater island location, Pine Island Camp has offered fun, traditional camp activities since 1902 in a rustic setting that develops a boy’s independence, imagination and character. PIC is seeking a creative and skilled Woodshop Instructor to lead our hands-on woodworking program during the summer season. The instructor will guide campers through a range of projects, using hand tools only, teaching fundamental woodworking skills while fostering creativity, patience, and craftsmanship. Responsibilities include planning and supervising engaging woodworking activities, ensuring safety in the shop, maintaining tools and equipment, and inspiring campers to explore their talents. Ideal candidates have experience in woodworking or carpentry, a passion for teaching children, and the ability to create a positive and inclusive learning environment. Join us in encouraging curiosity and skill-building in our unplugged, nature-based camp community. Candidates have the option of commuting to this position and working just during activity periods, or committing to a full summer experience and living at camp for the entirety of the summer season. This year's season runs from June 14th to August 13th.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver engaging woodworking projects that teach fundamental skills while fostering creativity and craftsmanship.
- Supervise campers in the woodshop, ensuring safety procedures are followed at all times and maintaining a secure and organized workspace.
- Provide individualized instruction and encouragement, adapting to the skill levels and interests of campers.
- Maintain and repair tools and equipment as needed, ensuring the woodshop is well-stocked and operational throughout the summer.
- Collaborate with camp staff to integrate woodworking projects into the broader camp program, enhancing the Pine Island experience.
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Proficiency in woodworking techniques, hand tools, and safety practices, with prior experience in a teaching or instructional role preferred.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to create a positive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for children.
- Commitment to safety and creativity, with a passion for fostering campers' confidence and curiosity through hands-on projects.
Compensation:
Compensation will depend on whether the candidate commutes or lives at camp. Commuters who work partial days (about 7 hours/day) will be compensated at an hourly rate, while full-time counselor who live and work at camp for the entire season will be paid a set seasonal salary.
