What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Department Technician position at Pioneers Medical Center?
Reports To : Emergency Department Director
FLSA Classification: PRN, Non-Exempt, Hourly
The ED technician is responsible and accountable to provide great care, including emotional support, to patients and their families in the Emergency Department by assisting ED Physicians, nurses, and mid-levels with patient care and procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Cares for patients with proficiency and within the scope of the ED Technician. This includes but is not limited to:
b. Wound care, irrigation, and dressings as directed.
c. Applies splints, assesses sensation, color, and circulation of affected extremities before and after splint placement, c-spine and spinal restriction/precautions, monitors airway and patient.
d. Transports patients to admitting units, lab, radiology, etc.; assists with transportation of unstable patients when required.
e. EKG, cardiac, and vital sign monitoring, O2 delivery devices, Doppler, Capnometer, etc.
f. Monitors and documents vital signs including O2 sat, pain level, and temperature, and communicates such with nurse, mid-levels, and/or physicians.
g. Review patient’s paper or electronic chart for orders and treatments. Assist other staff to ensure that orders are seen, taken off, in process, and that documentation is ongoing in the patient’s record. Is especially alert for IV, lab work, splint needs, and other tasks as appropriate.
- Assists coworkers and ancillary departments by:
b. Assist nurse in getting patient in gown, on monitors if needed, rails up and call light available. Be alert to jewelry and piercings that may need removed prior to procedures or exams, or remove those that are on affected extremities.
c. Follows all universal precautions and blood borne pathogen protocols and outlined by hospital policy. Initiate isolation precautions as appropriate for safety of patient, staff, and visitors. This may include use of isolation cart and signage or negative airflow room.
d. Is able to provide basic clerical support when needed, acts as a runner for lab work.
e. Assist Triage Nurse to make rounds in the waiting room, taking vital signs, and inquiring about safety, comfort, pain management, and other needs; relay such information to the Triage Nurse.
f. Assist with disaster drill training and planning as requested by the PlantOps director or Emergency Preparedness Committee.
g. Communicates cares or procedures to coworkers, patient, and family. Alleviates patient fears gains cooperation, and educates.
h. Assist with the orientation and education of staff and patients.
i. Assists with department cleaning, stocking and organization.
- Assist in ensuring patient satisfaction by:
b. Keeps patients informed of processes and delays; incorporates family and friends into the care of the patient by keeping them informed and up to date per patient request and HIPAA privacy rules.
c. Have knowledge and understanding of the hospital’s patient satisfaction survey questionnaire that the patient may receive.
- Other duties as assigned
Education and Experience:
- Completion of a certified EMS Training Program required.
- Registry with the Colorado Emergency and Trauma Services Registry required.
- Current, unencumbered EMT basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic license required.
- One (1) year of EMS experience preferred.
- Current BLS within three (3) months of hire or transfer.
- IV certification preferred.
