POSITION SUMMARY : A Health Unit Clerk (HUC) duties include the organization and ordering of data related to patient care activities and patient education.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
1. Organizes and maintains unit files of unit forms, correspondences and directives. Organizes and maintains patient education materials.
2. Maintains records of daily staffing variances. Assist with daily staffing.
3. Acts as a receptionist. Exercises tact, diplomacy and judgment in screening phone calls communicating with vendors, physicians, nursing and ancillary employees.
4. Prepares and collects data for studies.
5. Requisitions supplies related to the management of the Department in a timely manner.
6. Utilizes and participates in the Quality Improvement Process.
7. Acts as an information conduit to members of the department, other departments, patients, visitors and physicians.
8. Operates equipment related to communication and computer. Organizes a preventative maintenance and inventory file for department equipment related to administrative and patient care needs.
9. Attends 75%, a minimum of six, staff meetings annually to be successful. Attendance to CPR class and orientation are mandatory.
10. Keeps work area neat and organized. Organizes work and completes assignments in a timely manner. Ensures that utility room, kitchen, pantries, supply rooms and nurses lounge are maintained in a neat and orderly fashion.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Maintains records of repairs requested from various departments.
2. Inputs data and orders into the computer system.
3. Identifies and reports nursing service and facility trends and problems to the Department Director or designee and assists in their resolution.
4. Able to adapt to change in workload. Able to perform in a precise and accurate manner in handling priority tasks.
5. Acts as patient advocate for patient rights by initiating and maintaining confidentiality, privacy and safety for the patient.
6. Demonstrates proficiency in managing resources, following policies and procedures, utilizing equipment in a safe manner. Actively contributes to cost controls by managing time, resources and supplies effectively.
7. Maintains positive and caring interpersonal relationships with patient, families, and fellow employees.
8. Accepts constructive criticism and incorporates suggestions into practice.
9. Supports and promotes safety standards, identifies risk situations and intervenes appropriately.
10. Knowledge and ability to apply ethical and legal principles to practice.
11. Functions within limits of hospital and nursing department policies and procedures.
12. Other duties as assigned from time to time.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : None.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS :
1. Certified for HUC or training programs to establish competency preferred.
2. Able to read and write English.
3. Knowledge of fax machine, intercom system and telephone system.
4. Previous clinical experience in a patient care setting preferred, with successful completion of orientation and training to the point of competence.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS :
- Current AHA CPR certification required.
