Plains’ Early Talent program is an opportunity for post-secondary students to get hands-on experience and education that aligns with their degree in the oil and gas midstream sector. Our intern opportunities have been specifically designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply their academic studies and gain valuable experience through meaningful and challenging work.
Plains is currently looking to fill the position of Communications Intern to join our External Communications, Community Investment and Stakeholder Engagement team for a three-month term position beginning May 19, 2025. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with proven design and communication skills and the ability to collaborate with multiple departments. The External Communications Intern will support cross-functional, internal collaboration to help develop effective communication strategies for external audiences. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, providing digital and brand support, supporting our community investment program and stakeholder engagement initiatives, and creating collateral.
Responsibilities
For our summer internship program, we look for sophomores, juniors, or seniors, working toward a bachelor's degree with solid academic credentials along with significant extracurricular involvement. Strong written and verbal communications skills are key to our business as well as having strong attention to detail. Students must demonstrate effective planning and organizational skills, proficiency with Microsoft products (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and a strong desire to learn more about the Oil and Gas business.

The External Communications Intern will support cross-functional, internal collaboration to help develop effective communication strategies for external audiences. Responsibilities
- Develop visual communications material for corporate initiatives and channels, including but not limited to templates, presentations, event collateral, and external website;
- Assist in community investment and strategic stakeholder engagement initiatives across Plains footprint;
- Collaborate on social media content creation and scheduling;
- Assist with coordinating corporate photography and videography;
- Organize the digital asset library;
- Liaise with team members and other departments as required to enhance visual brand that meets client objectives;
- Identify and implement opportunities for efficiencies and process improvements;
- Complete and present an assigned project; and
- Ad-hoc analytical assignments and reporting as required.
- Minimum third-year student enrolled in full-time studies in a post-secondary institution, working towards a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or public relations;
- Preference will be given to a student who will be returning to university to finish their undergraduate degree following the completion of this work term; and
- Previous work terms are considered an asset.
- Communications expertise including excellent writing and editing skills;
- Comfortable and capable in interacting with others; strong communication skills, including public speaking proficiency;
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to build collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders;
- An entrepreneurial self-starter who is driven to learn and contribute;
- Strong interpersonal skills, sound judgment and problem-solving skills;
- Keen attention to detail, analysis and organization;
- Ability to balance multiple projects simultaneously;
- Skilled in simplifying complex ideas for a multitude of audiences;
- Proficiency with MS Office, including Excel, Word, Teams, SharePoint and Outlook;
- Established knowledge and use of Adobe Creative Suite;
- Proven flexibility and agility to adapt to changing business conditions;
- Comfortable working within a fast-paced team environment and under minimal supervision;
- Experience with video production and graphic design preferred;
- Interns must be able to commit to a 3-month work term starting May 19, 2025, to be considered for the program;
- Interns must be able and willing to relocate themselves to Houston for the entire duration of the work term;
- The successful candidate must comply with the Company’s Drug & Alcohol Policy including pre-employment testing; and
- The successful candidate must provide satisfactory references and complete a Criminal Background Check.
