The Kansas Organizer position requires a collaborative work style, a strong work ethic, and a keen enthusiasm for fostering connections among Planned Parenthood Great Plains (PPGP) and Planned Parenthood Great Plains Votes (PPGPV) supporters, volunteers, staff, Board members, donors, coalition partners, and other crucial stakeholders. Reporting directly to the Director of Legislative Affairs and Organizing (DLAO), this role requires building and implementing grassroots and organizing strategies and programs throughout Kansas and in the Greater Kansas City area. Advocacy and organizing tactics will focus on deepening the organization's influence specifically in the Kansas counties of Douglas, Shawnee, Johnson, Wyandotte and Sedgwick.   

The Kansas Organizer will work closely with the Kansas Lobbyist and Policy Analyst (KLPA) and with fellow members of the Legislative Affairs team. They will also collaborate regularly across teams within the External Affairs department structure, which also includes Development, Marketing & Communications, and Education.

Responsibilities

  • Help plan and execute Kansas organizing strategy with direction from DLAO and KLPA—including grassroots lobbying efforts; legislative advocacy trainings; calls to action and rapid response; and leading constituent engagement with elected officials. Conduct grassroots, pro-Planned Parenthood organizing in legislative districts, on area campuses, and at public events.
  • Plan and execute monthly supporter engagement actions in Kansas—which could include digital engagement, phone banking, visibility events, crowd canvassing, petition-gathering/sign-ups, in-district meetings with legislators, teach-ins, and trainings, etc.
  • Coordinate and implement Planned Parenthood sponsored legislative activities, lobby days, rallies, and media events.
  • Recruit, train, mobilize, and support volunteer leaders including table captains, phone bank captains, and lobby team leaders to conduct PPGP/PPGPV grassroots organizing efforts via one-on-one, phone, mail, and online communication.
  • Build volunteer teams and Action Councils to empower volunteer leaders for long-term supporter growth and capacity building.
  • Significantly increase PPGP/PPGPV supporter lists and volunteer base.
  • Maintain/update supporter lists and track all organizing action in VAN—including event attendance, recruitment and base building, and other engagement metrics.
  • Represent PPGP/PPGPV within local progressive coalitions and other progressive organizations in the region to implement legislative and grassroots strategies.
  • Work with Communications staff to inform PPGP supporters of local, state, and national legislation and public policies that affect PPGP.
  • Collaborate with the External Affairs team on community outreach activities, including representing PPGP/PPGPV at health fairs, schools, colleges, and community events.
  • Collaborate with Patient Advocacy and Volunteer Manager to prioritize recruiting efforts of PPGP’s BIPOC, patient advocates, and people who are 16-45 in age to the supporter and volunteer corps in Kansas.
  • Coordinate with DLAO and KLPA to develop and execute electoral activities through PPGPV including candidate endorsement and training, and direct voter contact efforts.

Experience And Qualifications

  • Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university, one to three years related experience and/or training in advocacy/organizing work or related area; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Microsoft Office, the Internet, and relational databases required. Experience with the Volunteer Action Network (VAN) database is preferred.
  • Commitment to PPGP’s mission, purpose, and values.
  • Commitment to inter- and intra-agency teamwork.
  • Driven, motivated, a self-starter, and able to work productively and effectively with sometimes minimal and remote supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Multi-disciplinary thinker with strong analytical skills and the ability to understand new concepts; to translate PPGP’s mission and work to diverse constituencies; and to solve complex problems.
  • Ethical, principled, and exercises good judgment.

$45,000 - $50,000 a year
