Job Summary:
Under the general supervision of the Provider or another Mohs Tech, the Mohs Tech will prepare tissue specimens by treating them with chemicals, slicing, and mounting them on glass slides for microscopic examination and analysis.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
- Responsible for proper set up of the workstation.
- Use proper PPE as required.
- Assists the Mohs surgeon as needed.
- Works with one specimen at a time when processing specimens.
- Checks that accession numbers/specimen numbers/patient names all match.
- Checks for special handling requirements.
- Understand inking and marking protocols.
- Aligns tissues accurately.
- Accurately assesses skin surface and lesions according to markings.
- Performs cryostat maintenance and understands how to use and adjust the cryostat temperatures and thicknesses as required for different specimen types.
- Follow lab and Mohs surgeon requirements for specimen thickness.
- Understand what aerosols and chemicals are used in the cryostat freezing process.
- Ensures sections are uniform and bisections of skin lesions are avoided.
- Avoids contamination of specimens.
- Properly organize sections on slides, label slides correctly, and place them in the correct order.
- Ensures stain qualities are adequate and knows how to correct stain problems.
- Checks that all patient, physician, quality check, and maintenance documentation is filled out properly.
- Adheres to all quality control and quality assurance policies and procedures and performs corrective actions as necessary.
- Notify Mohs surgeon of any missing documentation.
- Pulls slides as needed for reviews.
- Performs preventive maintenance and quality control procedures according to schedule, records temperatures on various instruments, changes staining solutions, and cleans all equipment.
- Sends permanent slides to pathologist when required.
- Cleans work area at the end of the day with bleach or bleach alternative and observes health safety protocols during the cleanup procedure to minimize risks to self and co-workers.
- Reads, understands, and follows all SOPs and safety requirements.
Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
Qualifications:
- 2 years of clinical laboratory or Mohs tech experience is required.
- 2 years of experience working in a lab or clinic.
- Prior dermatology experience is required.
- Quality written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail.
- Strong phone etiquette.
- Teamwork.
- Professional in appearance and mannerisms.
- Able to demonstrate compassion and caring when dealing with others, patients, and co-workers.
- Able to prioritize tasks, understand the provider’s instructions, and know when to seek information or advice.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience working on electronic medical records.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment, including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.
Physical Requirements: Must possess manual dexterity to operate office machines, including computer and calculator; stooping and bending to handle files and supplies; and mobility to complete errands or deliveries. Includes handling of sharps and chemicals.
